  1. 1. Greenhouse Gas Fluxes and Carbon Sequestration in Young Norway Spruce Stands : The Effects of Fertilization

    Author : Charlotta Håkansson; Johan Bergh; Per-Ola Hedwall; Monika Strömgren; Anna M. Jensen; Tomas Lundmark; Tobias Rütting; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; carbon balance; young mixed forests; Picea abies L. Karst. ; Betula spp; chamber measurements; forest floor greenhouse gas fluxes; eddy-flux technology; above ground biomass; carbon dioxide; methane; nitrous oxide; kolbalans; ung blandskog; Picea abies L. Karst. ; Betula spp; kammarmätningar; markflöden av växthusgaser; eddy-fluxteknik; biomassa ovan jord; koldioxid; metan; lustgas; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : The enormous challenge of climate change is discussed and debated today because of its major impact on life on Earth. The forests have an important role to play as the plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through their photosynthesis and the growing tree retain carbon (C). READ MORE

  2. 2. Ethanol Pulping of Reed Canary Grass

    Author : Helena Håkansson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Pulping; Nonwood plants; Reed canary grass; Ethanol; Organosolv pulping; Statistical analysis; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of processing an agricultural crop grown in Sweden to usable pulp. A further purpose was to study ethanol pulping applied to a non-wood raw material.The first part of this thesis deals with the criteria for selecting a fibre crop for further studies. READ MORE

    Abstract : Cystatin C variants with Arg8, Leu9 and/or Val10 replaced by Gly residues were produced by site-directed mutagenesis and E. coli expression. READ MORE

  4. 4. Attenuation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Colorectal Oncogenesis by Food Constituents: Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury and Induced Colitis in Rodents

    Author : Åsa Håkansson; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; Ischaemia Reperfusion; Rose hips; Colitis; Probiotics; Inflammation; Blueberry;

    Abstract : The enteric microbiota is increasingly implicated as a central factor in the development of intestinal inflammation in humans and experimental animals, and the intestinal environment is considered important in both colorectal cancer development and modulation of mucosal immunity. Diet-induced changes in the different populations of the intestinal microbiota can be achieved by use of probiotic bacteria, dietary fibre and berries rich in phenolic compounds. READ MORE

  5. 5. Reactors and biosensors for improved microbial degradation of acetonitrile

    Author : Kristina Håkansson; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; denitrification; nitrification; on-line analysis and control; Clark electrode; biosensor; biofilm process; acetonitrile; microbial degradation;

    Abstract : Biodegradation is becoming an attractive mode of operation for eliminating toxic chemicals released from industrial processes or already present in the environment. One needs, however, not only to identify organisms capable of degrading such chemicals, but also to address the issue of whether these chemicals, after being degraded, will be toxic to the degrading organisms if present in high concentrations.
