  1. 1. Cognition and social behaviour in schizophrenia: An animal model investigating the potential role of nitric oxide

    Author : Caroline Wass; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : schizophrenia; cognition; memory; Morris water maze; social function; social interaction; phencyclidine; nitric oxide; L-NAME; rat;

    Abstract : Cognitive deficits are the single strongest predictor of functional outcome in patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, these deficits are not satisfactorily alleviated by available antipsychotic treatment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nitric oxide in experimental sepsis

    Author : Peter Dahm; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensive care; Nitric oxide; Sepsis; NO inhalation; Endotoxin; Acute lung injury; ARDS; Nitric oxide synthase; L-NMMA; L-NAME; Anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology; Pigs; intensivvård;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is important in the control of blood pressure and organ perfusion. In septic shock, NO produced by inducible NO-synthase (NOS) has been claimed to mediate pathological vasodilation and cell injury, while NO produced by constitutive NOS may be protective in counteracting hypoperfusion and organ injury. 3. 3. Nitric oxide in brain contusion

    Author : Caroline Gahm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Apoptosis; Colchicine; Dexamethasone; eNOS; human; immunohistochemistry; iNOS; L-NAME; L-NIL; neuronal degeneration; Nimodipine; nitric oxide; NO; nNOS; rat; SPBN; Tirilazad Mesylate; traumatic brain injury;

    Abstract : Trauma to the brain is a leading cause of death and disability. The primary injury initiates a cascade of biochemical reactions in the brain that causes further neuronal damage, a process referred to as secondary brain injury. READ MORE

  4. 4. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion

    Author : Björn Åkesson; Allmänmedicin och klinisk epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacognosy; Pharmacological sciences; mouse; carbachol; muscarinic agonist; cyclic nucleotides; calcium-fluxes; NOS-inhibitors; in vitro and in vivo; insulin and glucagon secretion; Nitric oxide NO ; constitutive nitric oxide synthase cNOS ; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine. 5. 5. Schizophrenia and Nitric Oxide: Deficits in Information Processing Invetigated in Animal Models

    Author : Daniel Klamer; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; phencyclidine – nitric oxide – prepulse inhibition – habituation – acoustic startle – cAMP – in vivo microdialysis – NMDA receptor – rat – mouse – schizophrenia;

    Abstract : Rationale: Schizophrenia-like symptoms can be induced in humans by phencyclidine (PCP), a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Schizophrenic patients and PCP-treated animals display deficits in pre-attentive information processing, as assessed by e.g. prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response. READ MORE
