1. New aspects of voltage-gated calcium channel regulation in pancreatic beta-cells - Relevance for insulin release and type 2 diabetes
Abstract : Voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are essential transducers of cellular signals in many electrically excitable cells. In the pancreatic beta-cell they mediate controlled Ca2+ influx, which is the final trigger for Ca2+ dependent release (exocytosis) of the blood glucose lowering hormone insulin. READ MORE

2. Neurotransmission and functional synaptic plasticity in the rat medial preoptic nucleus
Abstract : Brain function implies complex information processing in neuronal circuits, critically dependent on the molecular machinery that enables signal transmission across synaptic contacts between neurons. The types of ion channels and receptors in the neuronal membranes vary with neuron types and brain regions and determine whether neuronal responses will be excitatory or inhibitory and often allow for functional synaptic plasticity which is thought to be the basis for much of the adaptability of the nervous system and for our ability to learn and store memories. 3. Regulation of glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells
Abstract : Glucagon secreted by pancreatic α-cells plays an important role in the regulation of blood glucose. In this thesis, different techniques such as electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry and hormone secretion assay were combined to explore the mechanisms by which glucagon secretion is regulated. 4. Afferent input to midbrain dopamine neurones and its modulation : an electrophysiological study i vitro
Abstract : Dopamine (DA) neurones of the ventral mesencephalon are involved in the control of reward related behaviour, cognitive functions and motor performances, and provide a critical site of action for major categories of neuropsychiatric drugs, such as antipsychotic agents, dependence producing drugs and anti-Parkinson medication. The midbrain DA neurones are mainly located in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNPC) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). READ MORE

5. Intracellular signaling of phosphorylated insitol compounds : a study in pancreatic beta-cells and hippocampal neurons
Abstract : The family of phosphorylated inositol compounds consists of soluble cytosolic inositol phosphates and insoluble inositol phospholipids, localized in cellular membranes and the nuclear matrix. Although inositol phospholipids only account for 5-10% of total plasma membrane lipids, these compounds and their inositol phosphate derivatives play an important role in a broad range of cellular processes including intracellular Ca 2+ signalling, ion channel regulation, vesicle trafficking, both exo- and endocytosis, cell growth and apoptosis.
