6. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model
Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE

7. Unravelling the structure and dynamics of lipid nanoparticles for biomolecule delivery
Abstract : Encapsulation in self-assembled lipid structures has been shown to increase the stability of large biomolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids (NAs), which has many potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In order to fully optimise the encapsulation system for a certain application, however, it is important to understand the effect of the encapsulated biomolecule on the lipid structure and vice versa. 8. Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Properties of Nonionic Surfactant Membranes
Abstract : An extensive investigation of the multilamellar vesicles (La*), lamellar (La), and multiply connected sponge (L3) phase formed in surfactant systems is presented in this thesis. These membrane structures were studied using surfactant systems containing poly(oxyethylene) alkyl ethers, n-CnH2n+1(OCH2CH2) mOH, commonly abbreviated as CnEm. READ MORE

9. Studies on new tuberculosis vaccine candidates in animal models
Abstract : Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem in many countries, especially in low income countries. Globally, TB causes more than 2 million human deaths annually and 1/5 of all adult deaths in developing countries. WHO estimates that one third of the world's population i.e. READ MORE

10. Mass Transport Properties in Supramolecular Systems Studied by Diffusion and Relaxation NMR
Abstract : This thesis shows how diffusion and relaxation NMR can be applied in various aspects to study mass transport in supramolecular systems. Information about these systems can be obtained, either by direct measurement of the molecules that are incorporated in a supramolecular structure, or via probe molecules, which indirectly gives information about the system.
