  1. 21. The Role of Chlamydia pneumoniae-induced Platelet Activation in Cardiovascular Disease : In vitro and In vivo studies

    Author : Hanna Kälvegren; Torbjörn Bengtsson; Arina Richter; Erik Kihlström; Kenneth Persson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chlamydia pneumoniae; Platelet; atherosclerosis; Infection; LDL-oxidation; Percutaneous coronary intervention; Cardiovascular disease; Serotonin; Reactive oxygen species production; Pharmacology; Farmakologi;

    Abstract : The common risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as obesity, high cholesterol levels, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes and high alcohol intake, only explain approximately 50% of cardiovascular disease events. It is thereby important to identify new mechanisms that can stimulate the process of atherosclerosis. READ MORE

  2. 22. Atherosclerosis in middle-aged men. A prospective study with focus on factors related to the metabolic syndrome

    Author : Karin Wallenfeldt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : apolipoproteins; atherosclerosis; C-reactive protein; insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL cholesterol; longitudinal study; metabolic syndrome X; smokeless tobacco; ultrasonography;

    Abstract : The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease CVD) risk factors. Pro-spective studies have demonstrated that patients with MetS are about three times more likely to experience CVD events than those without MetS. Up to one third of the adult population seems to be affected worldwide. READ MORE

  3. 23. Non-functioning pituitary adenomas and hypopituitarism - studies on morbidity and mortality

    Author : Casper Hammarstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Non-functioning pituitary adenomas; Hypopituitarism; Glucocorticoid replacement; Growth hormone replacement; Morbidity; Mortality; Cancer; LDL-cholesterol;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Hypopituitarism is most commonly caused by benign pituitary tumors, often resulting in insidious symptoms that develop over a long time. Due to either a mass effect exerted by the tumor, or due to the surgical treatment, hormonal deficiencies may arise, requiring hormone replacement. READ MORE

  4. 24. Regulation of human macrophage gene expression by oxidized low density lipoprotein. Studies on tumor necrosis factor-a and global gene expression profiles

    Author : Mikael C. O. Englund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; macrophage; gene expression; TNF-a; oxidized LDL; oxysterol; transcription factor; microarray;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial and progressive disease that is characterized by a focal thickening of the arteries caused by accumulation of lipoproteins, extracellular matrix, and the migration and proliferation of various cell types. Among the cells found in atherosclerotic lesions are macrophages, which accumulate lipids and are transformed into foam cells. READ MORE

  5. 25. Selenoprotein P. Nutritional and clinical aspects

    Author : Marie Persson Moschos; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Food and drink technology; oxidant defense; LDL-apheresis; European survey; selenium supplementation; cancer risk; selenium status; radioimmunoassay; selenoprotein P; human plasma; Livsmedelsteknik; Fysicumarkivet A:1999:Persson Moschos;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the nutritional regulation and clinical significance of selenoprotein P (SeP) in human plasma of healthy and diseased subjects was investigated. For the analysis of SeP, a radioimmunoassay was developed using polyclonal antibodies. READ MORE
