  1. 11. Pituitary regulation of plasma lipoprotein metabolism and intestinal cholesterol absorption

    Author : Manuela Matasconi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Increased levels of plasma cholesterol are associated with a higher risk to develop atherosclerosis, the leading cause of death in Western societies. The major part of cholesterol in human blood is transported within low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) that bind to specific cell surface receptors (LDLRs). READ MORE

  2. 12. Studies on cholesterol homeostasis by modulation of lipoproteins and bile acids

    Author : Lisa-Mari Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholesterol; lipoproteins; bile acids; cholestyramine; chenodeoxycholic acid; CYP7A1; HNF4alpha; PCSK9; hepatocytes; ethanol; atherosclerosis; ApoE; thyroid hormone receptor;

    Abstract : Excess plasma cholesterol, in particular high levels of LDL cholesterol, is a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The liver has a central role in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism: i) a major part of the cholesterol present in the body is synthesized in the liver; ii) the level of plasma lipoproteins is regulated by liver uptake and secretion of these particles and iii) the liver is essential for elimination of cholesterol from the body as such or by its conversion into bile acids. 3. 13. Signal transduction in restenosis and myocardial protection by hyperoxia

    Author : Arno Ruusalepp; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neointima; inflammation; NF-kappaB; preconditioning; MAPK; nitric oxide;

    Abstract : Ischemic heart disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the western world. Revascularization of ischemic myocardium is essential for cell survival, and is performed by thrombolysis, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and by coronary artery bypass grafting. 4. 14. Microarray Technology for Genotyping in Pharmacogenetics

    Author : Ulrika Liljedahl; Ann-Christine Syvänen; Denis Grant; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Molecular medicine; microarray; genotyping; pharmacogenetics; molecular medicine; single nucleotide polymorphism; hypertension; Molekylärmedicin; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ;

    Abstract : The studies in this thesis describe the development of a microarray based minisequencing system and its application to highly parallel genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms. The technical developments included identification of a three-dimensional microarray surface coating with high binding capacity for oligonucleotides modified with amino groups as the most optimal one for the system. 5. 15. Studies on lipoprotein metabolism and atherogenesis

    Author : Katharina Slätis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ApoA1; ApoB; ApoE; atherosclerosis; bile acids; cholic acid; cholesterol; cholesterol absorption; CYP7A1; CYP8B1; dexamethasone; GC-1; PAI-1; thyroid hormone receptor; very low density lipoprotein receptor;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of cardiovascular events such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, which together with stroke are responsible for around 50% of all deaths in the United States and Europe. Usually atherosclerosis develops over several decades and leads to a progressive narrowing of arterial vessels. READ MORE
