  2. 2. Fermentation as a Means of Optimizing the Glycaemic Index - Food Mechanisms and Metabolic Merits with Emphasis on Lactic Acid in Cereal Products

    Author : Elin Östman; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nutrition; starch; healthy human; fermentation; lactic acid; sourdough; cereal products; milk; glycaemic index; bread; Näringslära; diabetes; insulin response;

    Abstract : In current recommendations from FAO/WHO, foods that elicit low glycaemic responses and thus have low glycaemic indices (GIs) are advocated. The rationale for this recommendation is that low-GI diets have been shown to reduce risk factors for e.g. type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. READ MORE

  3. 3. Oxygen delivery and mitochondrial dysfunction as assessed by microdialysis during interventions in experimental sepsis

    Author : Magnus von Seth; Lipscey Miklós; Jan Sjölin; Mats Eriksson; Jukka Takala; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sepsis; animal models; microdialysis; endotoxin; Escherichia coli; tigecycline; doxycycline; albumins; capillary leak syndrome; lactic acid; oxygen delivery; multiple organ failure; mitochondria; tumor necrosis factor alpha; interleukin-6; cyanides; ouabain; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : Early administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics is the first goal in sepsis treatment. Besides from bacteriostatic/bactericidal effects, some antibiotics may also modify the host´s response to infection. The novel antibiotic tigecycline may exert such properties; however, this property has not been evaluated in large-animal trials. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of feeding yeasts on blood physiology and gut microbiota of rainbow trout

    Author : David Huyben; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Yeast represents a sustainable protein alternative to fishmeal in diets for farmed fish, although more than 40% replacement has been shown to reduce fish growth and welfare. This thesis investigated the effects of feeding high inclusions of inactivated and live yeasts to fish in order to replace fishmeal without negative health consequences. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation

    Author : Johan Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sensory nerves; neuropeptides; nasal mucosa; nitric oxide; vascular regulation; acoustic rhinometry; NK1-receptors; CGRP-receptors; vanilloid receptors; capsaicin; lactic acid; exercise; a-adrenoceptor agonists; pig; human.;

    Abstract : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects.
