  1. 11. Production, Purification and Characterization of Antimicrobial Biomolecules from Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria

    Author : Sahar Deraz; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lactobacillus; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; bacteriocin purification.; inhibitory activity; Bacteriocin; antimicrobial protein;

    Abstract : Development and optimization of the production of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their attendant 'natural' inhibitors as biopreservatives to control undesirable bacteria currently remains a primary focus of several laboratories involved in research concerning food safety and quality. Strategies utilized to study incorporation of biopreservatives into food include either direct use of LAB-strains or use of a biopreservative preparation in the form of previously fermented product or use of semipurified, purified, or chemically synthesized bacteriocins.     Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; symbiosis; host-association; Lactobacillus; Bifidobacterium; Rhizobiales; Bartonella; honeybees; ants; codon usage bias; genome architecture; genome organization; gene transfer agent; evolutionary genomics; comparative genomics; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the genomic study of symbionts of two different groups of hymenopterans: bees and ants. Both groups of insects have major ecological impact, and investigating their microbiomes increases our understanding of their health, diversity and evolution. READ MORE

  3. 13. Bacteria-host cell interactions : Studies on initial colonization, antimicrobial peptides, and biofilms

    Author : Gabriela Wassing; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Elena Vikström; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : The obligate human pathogen Neisseria meningitidis asymptomatically colonizes the upper respiratory tract, but crossing of the epithelial barrier can cause life-threatening meningitis and/or sepsis. N. READ MORE

  4. 14. Vaginal commensal bacteria. Interactions with cervix epithelial and monocytic cells and influence on cytokines and secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor, SLPI

    Author : Louise Strömbeck; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Prevotella bivia; bacterial vaginosis BV ; invasion; Lactobacillus; secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor SLPI ; cytokines; THP-1; HeLa cells;

    Abstract : Vaginal commensal bacteria Interactions with cervix epithelial and monocytic cells and influence on cytokines and secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor, SLPI Louise Strömbeck Department of Infectious Medicine, Gothenburg University Abstract Lactobacillus is the predominant species of the vaginal microbiota in women of childbearing age. Lactobacilli are thought to contribute to the local immune defence by producing a variety of antimicrobial substances and, thereby, attenuate growth of other opportunistic bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 15. Host-bacteria interactions : Host cell responses and bacterial pathogenesis

    Author : Nele de Klerk; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Teresa Frisan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Host-bacteria interaction; Helicobacter pylori; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Lactobacillus; Epithelial cells; Macrophages; EGR1; Amphiregulin; SabA; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach, where it causes gastritis that may develop into peptic ulcer disease or cancer when left untreated. Neisseria gonorrhoeae colonizes the urogenital tract and causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. READ MORE
