  1. 1. Uncertain Futures : Adaptive capacities to climate variability and change in the Lake Victoria Basin

    Author : Sara Gabrielsson; LUCSUS; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; adaptive capacities; climate vulnerability; collective action; Lake Victoria Basin; smallholder farmers; sustainable adaptation; sustainability science.;

    Abstract : The Lake Victoria basin (LVB) in East Africa can be considered a climate change hotspot because of its large rural population dependent on rain-fed farming. Drawing on extensive fieldwork (2007-2011) in rural communities along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya and Tanzania, I explore adaptive capacities to climate variability and change and discuss how they interrelate in situ. 2. 2. Data preparation, hydrodynamic and contaminant transport shallow-water simulations of Lake Victoria

    Author : Seema Paul; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Jesper Oppelstrup; Roger Thunvik; Felix Mtalo; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lake bathymetry model; Steady-state analysis; Numerical model validation; Lake water balance; Correlation and seasonal variations; Solute transport; Vattendjupskarta; Validering av numerisk modell; Vattenbalans; Korrelationer och säsongs-variation; Transport av lösliga ämnen; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : This study explores shallow lake numerical hydrodynamic processes that support model development and validation, extreme events and effects of water circulation in Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world, and the largest in East Africa. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hydrogeochemistry of arsenic, fluoride, and other trace elements in groundwater in northern Tanzania : Occurrence, distribution, and impacts on drinking water quality

    Author : Fanuel Josephat Ligate; Prosun Bhattacharya; Felix W Mtalo; Jyoti Prakash Maity; Joyanto Routh; KTH; []
    Keywords : Arsenic; Fluoride; Groundwater; Lake Victoria basin; Risk assessment; Sanya alluvial plain; Tanzania.; Aseniki; Bonde la Ziwa Victoria; Floridi; Maji yaliyopo ardhini; Tanzania; Tathmini ya hatari; Uwanda wa Aluvia ya Sanya.; Arsenik; Fluorid; Grundvatten; Viktoriasjön; Riskbedömning; Sanya alluvial slätt; Tanzania.; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : The occurrence of arsenic (As), fluoride (F-), and other trace elements (TEs) with potential toxicity in groundwater is a global environmental concern. According to the National water resource mapping database, about 76 % of the drinking water supply in Tanzania is abstracted from groundwater sources. READ MORE

  4. 4. Treatment of arsenic contaminated drinking water from the sources around the gold mining areas of Geita and Mara, Tanzania : Removal efficiency of locally available materials, bauxite, gypsum and magnesite

    Abstract : In recent years, high arsenic (As) levels of about 300 µg/L have been reported around the gold mining areas of Geita and Mara regions within the Lake Victoria basin (LVB) in Tanzania. During a sampling campaign at Geita and Mara, the groundwater and surface water samples revealed the presence of high As concentrations as well as Fe and sulfide. READ MORE

  5. 5. Batch Sorption Studies of Aqueous Cadmium and Lead from Contaminated Water onto Selected Biosorbents

    Abstract : Groundwater, wastewater, surface runoff and surface water samples from Lake Victoria basin, Uganda was assessed for trace metals contamination. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biosorbents from Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were investigated for removal of selected trace metals from contaminated water in batch studies.
