  1. 1. Response of Bolivian Altiplano Lakes to Seasonal and Annual Climate Variations

    Author : Ramiro Pillco; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ENSO; terminal lake; bathymetry; lake level; water balance; lake routing; paleolakes; climate change; precipitation pattern; intermittent rivers.; Desaguadero River; Lake Titicaca; Lake Poopó;

    Abstract : The Bolivian Altiplano is situated between two mountain ranges, the western and eastern central Andes in South America. It has two major lakes, Lake Titicaca to the north, and Lake Poopó to the south, which both are important for the nature as well as for the living conditions on the Altiplano. The two lakes are the remnants of large paleolakes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Late Weichselian and early Holocene changes of vegetation, climate and sea level on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland

    Author : Mats Rundgren; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; asthenosphere viscosity; glacial loading unloading; marine polar front migrations; sea-level change; climate change; vegetation change; Early Holocene; Late Weichselian; Iceland; Lake sediments; Skagi peninsula; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : Sediment sequences from five lakes on the Skagi peninsula, northern Iceland, were subjected to mineral magnetic analysis, carbon analysis, pollen analysis, plant macrofossil analysis, diatom analysis, radiocarbon dating and tephra analysis in order to make detailed reconstructions of vegetation, climate and sea level during the Late Weichselian and Early Holocene. The main purpose was to investigate if the dramatic deglacial climatic shifts recorded in proxy records from the North Atlantic region, such as ice cores, marine sediments and lake sediments, also are registered in Skagi lake sediments, which would be expected considering Iceland´s position in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, within the range of the Late Weichselian–Early Holocene migrations of the marine polar front. 3. 3. Lake Hydrodynamics and Pollution Transport under Climate Change : The Case of Lake Victoria

    Author : Seema Paul; Henrik Ernstson; Zahra Kalantari; Abhijit Mukherjee; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bathymetry mapping; model verification; water balance; correlation; tracer transport; wind hydrodynamics; pollution and nutrient transport; climate effect; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : A very small part of the total earth’s water is freshwater (only 2.5 %). Unfortunately, due to climate change and pervasive manmade activities, surface freshwater quality in many places of the world has become degraded. READ MORE

  4. 4. Diatoms in Lake Duluti : Tracking Environmental Variability in Northern Tanzania during the Past 1000 Years

    Author : Helena Öberg; Lars-Ove Westerberg; Karin Holmgren; Jan Risberg; Robert Marchant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleolimnology; Tanzania; Diatoms; Climate change; Crater lake; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The tropics are the regions which are least understood climatically and new data on past climate variability is necessary for reliable future modeling of climate change. This thesis contributes with new paleoenvironmental information from a small crater lake in northern Tanzania and provides an additional link between the integrated history of climate, environment and socioeconomic variability in tropical Africa. 5. 5. Linking lake variability, climate, and human activity in Basotu, Tanzania

    Author : Lindsey Higgins; Lars-Ove Westerberg; Jan Risberg; Sarah Davies; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tanzania; crater lake; climate change; land-use change; water resources; environmental variability; diatoms; paleolimnology; chronology; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Paleoenvironmental investigations establish important baseline knowledge of the natural variability of lake systems, to better understand human impacts on the landscape, and the effects of climate change on water resources. By combining long-term environmental history with investigations into modern land use patterns and climatological events, a wider perspective can be reached that has practical applications in water governance.
