  1. 1. Recombination frequencies in hybrid females of inbred lines of Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Staffan Lake; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The intention of the present study was to examine the effect of the maternal genome and cytoplasm, of the attachment of extra heterochromatin of the transposing of heterochromatic regions into euchromatic parts and of temperature shocks during various stages of the development on recombination in Drosophila metanogaster. The access to marker genes along the X-chromosome induced in the inbred line made it possible to examine this array of different conditions in females with an isogenic background. READ MORE

  2. 2. Multifont recognition System for Ethiopic Script

    Author : Yaregal Assabie Lake; Josef Bigun; Högskolan i Halmstad; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ethiopic character recognition; OCR; Multifont recognition; Amharic; Direction fields; Structural and syntactic pattern recognition; Image analysis; Bildanalys;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we present a general framework for multi-font, multi-size and multi-style Ethiopic character recognition system. We propose structural and syntactic techniques for recognition of Ethiopic characters where the graphically comnplex characters are represented by less complex primitive structures and their spatial interrelationships. 3. 3. Factors regulating the origin and magnitude of carbon dioxide emissions from high-latitude lakes

    Author : Hendricus Verheijen; Jan Karlsson; Cristian Gudasz; David A. Seekell; Marcus Klaus; Anne Ojala; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lake; carbon dioxide; organic carbon; inorganic carbon; arctic; emission; environmental science; miljövetenskap; climate change; klimatförändringar; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Lake ecosystems receive, transmit and process terrestrial carbon and thereby link terrestrial, aquatic and global carbon cycles. Most lakes evade CO2 to the atmosphere, but the annual magnitude of CO2 evasion, as well as sources and mechanisms underpinning CO2 evasion from lakes are still largely unresolved. READ MORE

  4. 4. Life strategies for substrate assimilation by freshwater bacterioplankton

    Author : Monica Ricão Canelhas; Stefan Bertilsson; Jay T. Lennon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : lake; methane; bacteria; substrate; methanotrophs; pulse; chemostat;

    Abstract : The availability of substrates is one of the most important environmental constraints on the diversity and functioning of microorganisms. Substrate quantity and quality as well as the metabolic features of heterotrophic microorganisms determine the efficiency, speed and type of transformation that can occur in nature. READ MORE

  5. 5. Characterization of Raw Materials for Salt Extraction from Lake Katwe, Uganda

    Author : Hillary Kasedde; Stefan Jonsson; Baohua Zhu; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lake Katwe; salt extraction; brine; evaporites; characterization; PHREEQC;

    Abstract : Uganda is well endowed with economic quantities of salt evident in the interstitial brines and evaporite deposits of Lake Katwe, a closed saline lake located in the western branch of the great East African rift valley. Currently, rudimentally methods of salt mining based on solar evaporation of brine continue to be used for salt extraction at the lake. READ MORE
