  1. 1. Wetlands as a means to reduce the environmental impact of mine drainage waters

    Author : Åsa Sjöblom; Bert Allard; Karsten Håkansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lakvatten; våtmarker; vattenrening; miljö; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : In many mining regions of the world, pollution of surface water and groundwater by drainage water originating from mines aiming waste poses either a serious threat to the environment, or a severe environmental problem. During the last two and a half decades, treatment of mine drainage water in constructed and natural wetlands has emerged as an alternative to more conventional methods to handle the problem. 2. 2. Suitability of industrial residues for preventing acid rock drainage generation from waste rock

    Author : Elsa Nyström; Lena Alakangas; Hanna Kaasalainen; Christian Maurice; Päivi M. Kauppila; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geochemistry; Tillämpad geokemi;

    Abstract : One of the main and most challenging environmental problems related to mining is the generation of acid rock drainage (ARD), a leachate characterized by low pH and elevated concentrations of sulfate, metals, and metalloids formed when sulfide-bearing minerals are subjected to oxygen and water. During the operation of a mine, waste rock is often deposited in heaps and usually left under ambient conditions, enabling sulfides to oxidize. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization, toxicity and treatment of wood leachate generated outdoors by the wood-based industry

    Author : Henric Svensson; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Wood leachate; Log yard runoff; Stormwater; Toxicity; Artemia salina; Vibrio fischeri; Constructed wetlands; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood is a natural raw material, and would hardly be considered a risk to the environment. However, the handling of wood materials on an industrial scale has been shown to have a negative impact on water bodies that run-off from industrial sites that process wood-based materials. 4. 4. Characterization and treatment of municipal landfill leachates

    Author : Ulrika Welander; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; physical chemical treatment; biological treatment; characterization; organic substances; leachate treatment; municipal landfill; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Abstract The efficiency of different leachate treatment methods for the removal of refractory organic compounds and ammonium-nitrogen was investigated. The methods evaluated were nitrification, denitrification, adsorption onto activated carbon, precipitation by ferric chloride or aluminum sulphate and oxidation by ozone or Fenton´s reagent. 5. 5. Methodology for evaluation of hazards from solid waste and landfill-generated leachate

    Author : Britt-Marie Svensson; Lennart Mathiasson; Lennart Mårtensson; Ann-Sofi Rehnstam-Holm; Kenneth M. Persson; Högskolan Kristianstad; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical protocol; organic pollutants; toxicity test; landfill leachate; leachate treatment; leaching test; waste acceptance criteria; Chemistry; Kemi; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; leaching test; waste acceptance criteria.;

    Abstract : A methodology based on an analytical protocol for evaluation of hazards from landfill leachate and solid waste is described. A dynamic analytical protocol, the LAQUA protocol, including measurements of inorganic and water-quality parameters, polar and non-polar organic marker compounds, and toxicity, was constructed.
