  1. 1. Inferring Land Use from Remote Sensing Imagery : A context-based approach

    Author : Michael Meinild Nielsen; Bo Malmberg; Anders Wästfelt; Douglas A. Stow; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; land use; remote sensing; urban remote sensing; image analysis; segmentation; spatial context; land cover; land cover configuration; farming types; bark beetle; dead trees; forest inventory; kulturgeografi; Human Geography;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigates the potential of classification methods based on spatial context to infer specific forms of land use from remote sensing data. The problem is that some types of land use are characterized by a complex configuration of land covers that traditional per-pixel based methods have problems classifying due to spectral heterogeneity. 2. 2. Histories of reindeer husbandry resilience : land use and social networks of reindeer husbandry in Swedish Sápmi 1740-1920

    Author : Isabelle Brännlund; Per Axelsson; Tom Ericsson; Bruce Forbes; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; History; Sápmi; reindeer husbandry; resilience; adaptive capacity; livelihood diversity; taxation land; place-attachment; social organization; historia; History;

    Abstract : Against a background of ongoing and predicted climatic and environmental change facing humans on a global level, this thesis combines historical perspectives with theories of social resilience in a study of reindeer husbandry in Swedish Sápmi, from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. The thesis includes four individual studies that examine the topic from different angles, connected together by reoccurring elements of social resilience. READ MORE

  3. 3. Structure and Stability of Ecological Networks : The role of dynamic dimensionality and species variability in resource use

    Author : David Gilljam; Bo Ebenman; Peter Münger; José Montoya; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the response of ecological communities to environmental variability and species loss. My approach is theoretical; I use mathematical models of networks where species population dynamics are described by ordinary differential equations. READ MORE

  4. 4. Contested Landscapes : social-ecological interactions between forestry and reindeer husbandry

    Author : Tim Horstkotte; Jon Moen; Camilla Sandström; Micheline Manseau; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Reindeer husbandry; forestry; adaptive capacity; arboreal lichens; snow; winter pasture; natural resource management; multiple use; land-use conflict; habitat fragmentation;

    Abstract : Throughout northern Fennoscandia, reindeer husbandry is a central part in the cultural heritage of the Sámi people. In its history, Sámi culture and reindeer husbandry have undergone significant adaptations to environmental, social and political challenges. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pollen-based quantitative reconstruction of land-cover change in Europe from 11,500 years ago until present - A dataset suitable for climate modelling

    Author : Anna-Kari Trondman; Marie-José Gaillard; Chris Caseldine; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pollen data; REVEALS model; model testing; land vegetation; land-cover; Holocene; Europe;

    Abstract : The major objective of this thesis was to produce descriptions of the land vegetation-cover in Europe for selected time windows of the Holocene (6000, 3000, 500, 200, and 50 calendar years before present (BP=1950)) that can be used in climate modelling. Land vegetation is part of the climate system; its changes influence climate through biogeophysical and biogeochemical processes. READ MORE
