  1. 6. Histories of reindeer husbandry resilience : land use and social networks of reindeer husbandry in Swedish Sápmi 1740-1920

    Author : Isabelle Brännlund; Per Axelsson; Tom Ericsson; Bruce Forbes; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; History; Sápmi; reindeer husbandry; resilience; adaptive capacity; livelihood diversity; taxation land; place-attachment; social organization; historia; History;

    Abstract : Against a background of ongoing and predicted climatic and environmental change facing humans on a global level, this thesis combines historical perspectives with theories of social resilience in a study of reindeer husbandry in Swedish Sápmi, from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. The thesis includes four individual studies that examine the topic from different angles, connected together by reoccurring elements of social resilience. READ MORE

  2. 7. From the sea to the land beyond : exploring plural perspectives on whaling

    Author : Benedict E. Singleton; Rolf Lidskog; Michael Thompson; C.S.A. Kris van Koppen; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; whaling; Faroe Islands; ontological turn; cultural theory; the commons; political ecology; environmental conflict; environmental policy; conservation; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Abstract : A perennial challenge in efforts to deal with environmental issues is the question of how to simplify. As such, where and when one simplifies is often a source of conflict, but perversely also paramount to finding a solution. This thesis focuses on one long-standing environmental issue, the whaling debate. READ MORE

  3. 8. Urban Land-cover Mapping with High-resolution Spaceborne SAR Data

    Author : Hongtao Hu; Yifang Ban; Johan Fransson; KTH; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; High-resolution; RADARSAT-1 SAR; RADARSAT-2 SAR; Urban Land Cover; Object-based Classification; Neural Network; Support Vector Machines.; Remote sensing; Fjärranalys;

    Abstract : Urban areas around the world are changing constantly and therefore it is necessary to update urban land cover maps regularly. Remote sensing techniques have been used to monitor changes and update land-use/land-cover information in urban areas for decades. Optical imaging systems have received most of the attention in urban studies. READ MORE

  4. 9. Multitemporal Spaceborne Polarimetric SAR Data for Urban Land Cover Mapping

    Author : Xin Niu; Yifang Ban; Paolo Gamba; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RADARSAT-2; spaceborne; polarimetric SAR; urban land cover; classification; Information technology; Informationsteknik;

    Abstract : Urban represents one of the most dynamic areas in the global change context. To support rational policies for sustainable urban development, remote sensing technologies such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) enjoy increasing popularity for collecting up-to-date and reliable information such as urban land cover/land-use. 5. 10. Multitemporal Spaceborne Polarimetric SAR Data for Urban Land Cover Mapping

    Author : Xin Niu; Yifang Ban; Laurent Ferro-Famil; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; RADARSAT-2; Spaceborne; Polarimetric SAR; Urban Land cover; Object-based Rule-based Classification; Support Vector Machines; Contextual; Stochastic Expectation-Maximization; Markov Random Field.;

    Abstract : Urban land cover mapping represents one of the most important remote sensing applications in the context of rapid global urbanization. In recent years, high resolution spaceborne Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) has been increasingly used for urban land cover/land-use mapping, since more information could be obtained in multiple polarizations and the collection of such data is less influenced by solar illumination and weather conditions.
