1. Superconductivity in the presence of magnetic steps
Abstract : This thesis investigates the distribution of superconductivity in a Type-II planar, bounded, and smooth superconductor submitted to a piecewise-constant magnetic field with a jump discontinuity along smooth curves---the magnetic edge. This discontinuous case has not been treated before in the mathematics literature, where the considered applied magnetic field is usually assumed to be smooth. READ MORE

2. Index theory in geometry and physics
Abstract : This thesis contains three papers in the area of index theory and its applications in geometry and mathematical physics. These papers deal with the problems of calculating the charge deficiency on the Landau levels and that of finding explicit analytic formulas for mapping degrees of Hölder continuous mappings. 3. Theory of Electron Transport in Superconducting Heterostructures
Abstract : This thesis deals theoretically with electron transport in superconducting heterostructures. Depending on the system I use different theoretical approaches. The thesis contains an introduction followed by four research papers (Papers I-IV). The introduction gives the background of the work in Papers I-IV. READ MORE

4. Breaking the symmetry : spin splitting of hole subbands in strained quantum wells
Abstract : Properties of the subband structure and related propertiesof quantum wells (QWs) are investigated, within the frameworkof the multi-band envelope function method. The subbands of aQW are replaced by discrete Landau levels when a magnetic fieldis applied perpendicular to the plane of the well. READ MORE

5. Magnetic deflagration and detonation in crystals of nanomagnets
Abstract : In this thesis we cover the dynamics of the macro magnetic transformations (spin avalanches) in crystals of molecular nanomagnets, also known as magnetic deflagration and detonation.Taking a single-molecule Hamiltonian, we calculate the dependence of Zeeman energy and the activation energy as a function of an external magnetic field at different angles relative to the easy axis of the crystal.
