  1. 1. Monitoring biodiversity in cultural landscapes: development of remote sensing- and GIS-based methods

    Author : Jonas Dalmayne; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : Remote sensing; statistical modeling; spatial scales; partial least squares; support vector machines; grazed grasslands; LULC; HySpex; Worldview-2; Landsat; heterogeneity; landscape complexity; plant species diversity;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I explore the relationships between structural and compositional landscape properties, and species diversity, using remotely sensed data on a variety of spatial scales. The thesis shows that increased landscape heterogeneity, measured using environmental and spectral variables that were used both separately and combined, is generally positively related to plant species richness. 2. 2. Remote Sensing of Forest Decline in the Czech Republic

    Author : Jonas Ardö; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Czech Republic; neural networks; sulphur dioxide; air pollution; Norway spruce; deforestation; forest decline; GIS; spectral characteristics; Remote sensing; Landsat; Ore Mountains; Geology; physical geography; Geologi; fysisk geografi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the localisation and quantification of deforestation and forest damage in Norway spruce forests in northern Czech Republic using Landsat data. Severe defoliation increases the spectral reflectance in all wavelength bands, especially in the mid infrared region. READ MORE

  3. 3. Remote Sensing of Woodland Structure and Composition in the Sudano-Sahelian zone : Application of WorldView-2 and Landsat 8

    Author : Martin Karlson; Madelene Ostwald; Tina Schmid Neset; Heather Reese; Frédéric Achard Forobs; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Remote sensing; Sudano-Sahel; woodland; agroforestry; WorldView-2; Landsat 8; tree attributes; tree canopy cover; aboveground biomass; Random Forest; Fjärranalys; Sudano-Sahel; woodland; WorldView-2; Landsat 8; trädattribut; trädtäcke; biomassa; Random Forest;

    Abstract : Woodlands constitute the subsistence base of the majority of people in the Sudano-Sahelian zone (SSZ), but low availability of in situ data on vegetation structure and composition hampers research and monitoring. This thesis explores the utility of remote sensing for mapping and analysing vegetation, primarily trees, in the SSZ. READ MORE

  5. 5. Morphometric and Landscape Feature Analysis with Artificial Neural Networks and SRTM data : Applications in Humid and Arid Environments

    Author : Amir Houshang Ehsani; Friedrich Quiel; Wolfgang Wagner; KTH; []
    Keywords : Self Organizing Map; Neural Network; Morphometric Feature; Landscape; Yardang; Lut Desert; Potential natural vegetation; geoecosystem; Landform; Landsat ETM ; Morphometric Parameters; SRTM; Resolution; Curvatures; DEM.; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a semi-automatic method to analyze morphometric features and landscape elements based on Self Organizing Map (SOM) as an unsupervised Artificial Neural Network algorithm in two completely different environments: 1) the Man and Biosphere Reserve “Eastern Carpathians” (Central Europe) as a complex mountainous humid area and 2) Lut Desert, Iran, a hyper arid region characterized by repetition of wind-eroded features. In 2003, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released the SRTM/ SIR-C band data with 3 arc seconds (approx. READ MORE
