  1. 1. Biomimetic Membranes: : Molecular Structure and Stability Studies by Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy

    Author : Jonathan F.D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; Magnus C. Johnson; Tore Brinck; Lars Kloo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy VSFS ; Langmuir monolayer; LB depositon; phospholipids; oxidation; biomimetic membranes; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In the research presented in this licentiate thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy, VSFS, combined with the Langmuir trough has been utilized to investigate Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposited mono- and bilayers of phospholipids. Their molecular structure, stability, and hydration were probed to gain additional understanding of important properties aiming at facilitating the use of such layers as model systems for biological membranes. 2. 2. Phospholipid membranes in biosensor applications : Stability, activity and kinetics of reconstituted proteins and glycolipids in supported membranes

    Author : Inga Gustafson; Gertrud Puu; Sven Lindskog; Peter Konradsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Phospholipid films; Liposomes; Membrane proteins; Glycolipids; Ellipsometry; Langmuir Blodgett LB ; Surface plasmon resonance SPR ; Resonant mirror RM ; Atomic force microscopy AFM ; Biosensors; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : In this study the formation of supported membranes onto planar solid supports has been investigated. The stability and activity of reconstituted membrane receptors has been studied. The potential use of such preparations in biosensor applications is discussed.The lipid films were made by the Langmuir Blodgett and by the liposome fusion techniques. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hydrophobic surfaces: Effect of surface structure on wetting and interaction forces

    Author : Petra M Hansson; Per M. Claesson; Agne Swerin; Adam C Simonsen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hydrophobic surface; superhydrophobic surface; atomic force microscopy; surface forces; capillary forces; cavitaion; surface roughness; friction; wetting; confocal Raman; contact angles; surface preparation; Langmuir-Blodgett;

    Abstract : The use of hydrophobic surfaces is important for many processes both in nature and industry. Interactions between hydrophobic species play a key role in industrial applications such as water-cleaning procedures and pitch control during papermaking but they also give information on how to design surfaces like hydrophobic mineral pigments. Author : Helen Sjögren; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; tyrosine ; co-poly-L lysine; phenylalanine ; co-poly-L- lysine; poly-L-glutamate; poly-L-lysine; poly-L-valine; poly-L-isoleucine; poly-gamma-methyl-L-glutamate; poly-L-leucine; monolayer; Langmuir-Blodgett film; CD spectroscopy; random coil; alpha-helix; surfactant stabilisation; polypeptide; polyamino acid;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis work is to understand and be able to control polypeptide conformation and interactions at interfaces and in solution by changing the solution conditions. For this purpose simple model polypeptides, so-called polyamino acids, have been investigated at the air-liquid interface, as well as in aqueous solutions. READ MORE
