  1. 11. Bilingual students' learning in science : Language, gestures and phyiscal artefacts

    Author : Zeynep Ünsal; Britt Jakobson; Per-Olof Wickman; Bengt-Olov Molander; Erik Knain; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; science education; bilingual students; mediating means; language; gestures; physical artefacts; learning; meaning-making; practical epistemological analysis; translanguaging; continuity; naturvetenskapsämnenas didaktik; Science Education;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to examine how language, gestures and physical artefacts are used in science classes with emergent bilingual students who do not share the same minority language as their classmates or teachers. The purpose is to contribute to findings that can enhance emergent bilingual students’ learning in science. READ MORE

  2. 12. Age and Constraints on Language Learning : First Language Retention and Second Language Acquisition in International Adoptees

    Author : Gunnar Norrman; Emanuel Bylund Spångberg; Guillaume Thierry; Janet Werker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bilingualism; critical period; electroencephalography; event-related potentials; first language retention; international adoption; phonology; second language acquisition; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the influence of age of acquisition on the long-term second language development of international adoptees. Because age of acquisition typically coincides with the onset of bilingualism, the study of maturational age effects in second language acquisition has been empirically and conceptually entangled with changes in language input and use. 3. 13. Exploring natural language processing for single-word and multi-word lexical complexity from a second language learner perspective

    Author : David Alfter; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural language processing; lexical complexity; CEFR; second language learning; machine learning; crowdsourcing;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we investigate how natural language processing (NLP) tools and techniques can be applied to vocabulary aimed at second language learners of Swedish in order to classify vocabulary items into different proficiency levels suitable for learners of different levels. In the first part, we use feature-engineering to represent words as vectors and feed these vectors into machine learning algorithms in order to (1) learn CEFR labels from the input data and (2) predict the CEFR level of unseen words. Abstract : This thesis contributes to the field of science education with two studies investigating science literacy in its practice in everyday life. The approach embrace a view on science learning as embedded in the context of situation, resulting in the study of two practices: on-line communication and science classroom. READ MORE

  5. 15. The Virtual Language Teacher : Models and applications for language learning using embodied conversational agents

    Author : Preben Wik; Björn Granström; Olov Engwall; Valerie Hazan; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Language learning; embodied conversational agents; speech technology; computer assisted language learning; computer assisted pronunciation training; Information technology; Informationsteknik; SRA - ICT; SRA - Informations- och kommunikationsteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a framework for computer assisted language learning using a virtual language teacher. It is an attempt at creating, not only a new type of language learning software, but also a server-based application that collects large amounts of speech material for future research purposes.
