  1. 1. Carbon stocks and fluxes in a young Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) plantation in Iceland

    Author : Brynhildur Bjarnadottir; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; interannual variability; carbon balance; Larix sibirica; afforestation; stock-change method; carbon sequestration; eddy covariance; biomass functions;

    Abstract : The understanding of how forests function with respect to carbon (C) balance and its interaction with the climate system is a fundamental question in climate change research. Another important question is how large the sink for CO2 is in northern forests and how it varies with forest type, management, stand age and with external factors, such as climate variability. 2. 2. Treeline dynamics in short and long term perspectives : observational and historical evidence from the southern Swedish Scandes

    Author : Lisa Öberg; Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson; Leif Kullman; Aage Paus; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii; Picea abies; Pinus sylvestris; Larix sibirica; climate; Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii; Picea abies; Pinus sylvestris; Larix sibirica;

    Abstract : Treelines in high-mountain regions are constrained by heat deficiency, although the working mechanisms are still not entirely understood. Observational and paleoecological studies on treeline performance may contribute to increased understanding of the treeline phenomenon in general. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic variation in frost tolerance, juvenile growth and timber production in Russian larches (Larix Mill.) : implications for use in Sweden

    Author : Lars Karlman; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Larch (Larix sp Mill.) is an important component in boreal montane and subalpine forests in the northern hemisphere. Macrofossils of larch in the Scandinavian mountains prove the existence of larch in Scandinavia after the last ice age, Siberian or Russian larch is now considered as an indigenous tree species of Sweden. 4. 4. Applications of visible and near infrared spectroscopy for sorting and identification of tree seeds

    Author : Mostafa Farhadi; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Seeds are the most commonly used regeneration material for reforestation purpose; hence interest in “precision sowing” among nurseries is high due to the high cost of containerized seedling production. In addition, the increased interest in growing hybrid larch in commercial forestry has raised concerns about the purity of hybrid larch seed lots, as there are large proportions of pure parental seeds mixed with hybrid larch seed lots. 5. 5. Regeneration in continuous cover forestry systems

    Author : Charlotta Erefur; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the studies underlying this thesis has been to qualify and quantify the regeneration of tree species in a range of typical growing environments of possible Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) silvicultural systems in boreal forests of northern Sweden. Data presented in Papers I and II show that the light environment did not differ significantly between points at different distances to trees, but it was clearly affected by the stand stem density (SSD).
