  1. 16. Plant-Derived Substances and Cardiovascular Diseases : Effects of Flavonoids, Terpenes and Sterols on Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Nitric Oxide

    Author : Ingrid Persson; Rolf G.G. Andersson; Lars Bohlin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Diet has for many years been known to play a key role in the development of chronic diseases. There are clear associations between consumption of vegetables, fruits and berries, and risk of cardiovascular diseases, the number one cause of death in the world. READ MORE

  2. 17. Bioactive Compounds from the Marine Sponge Geodia barretti : Characterization, Antifouling Activity and Molecular Targets

    Author : Martin Sjögren; Lars Bohlin; Per Jonsson; Anna-Karin Borg-Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmacognosy; Geodia barretti; barettin; secondary metabolites; settling inhibition; Balanus improvisus; analogs; 5-HT; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : The marine sponge Geodia barretti produces a range of secondary metabolites. Two of these compounds were isolated and elucidated guided by their ability to inhibit settlement of cypris larvae of the barnacle Balanus improvisus. READ MORE

  3. 18. Analysis of Secondary Metabolites from Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium nalgiovense : Antimicrobial Compounds from Filamentous Fungi Isolated from Extreme Environments

    Author : Stefan Svahn; Lars Bohlin; Björn Olsen; Ulf Göransson; Erja Chryssanthou; Douglas Kinghorn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aspergillus fumigatus; Penicillium nalgiovense; secondary metabolites; invasive aspergillosis; elicitation; gliotoxin; bis methyl gliotoxin; amphotericin B; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the cultivation and extraction of filamentous fungi isolated from extreme environments in the search for new antibiotic compounds. Filamentous fungi are a rich source of medicines including antibiotics, and it is believed that many currently unknown fungal species and bioactive fungal metabolites remain to be discovered. 4. 19. Cytotoxic Cyclotides : Structure, Activity, and Mode of Action

    Author : Erika Svangård; Per Claeson; Lars Bohlin; Ulf Göransson; John H. Cardellina II; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; cyclotide; cytotoxic; cancer; cyclic cystine knot; Viola; Violaceae; liposome; hollow fibre; homology modelling; mass spectrometry; amphipathic; structure–activity; tumour; membrane disruption; necrosis; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : Cyclotides are small cyclic plant proteins, and this thesis addresses their cytotoxic structure-activity properties and their mode of action on human cancer cell lines. Cyclotides were isolated from Viola odorata and Viola tricolor; three novel cyclotide sequences and two known sequences, but of new origin, were identified using mass spectrometry, amino acid analysis, and Edman degradation. 5. 20. Cyclotides : Tuning Parameters Toward Their Use in Drug Design

    Author : Mariamawit Yonathan Yeshak; Ulf Göransson; Lars Bohlin; Kaleab Asres; Robert Kiss; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : cyclotide; Viola abyssinica; Viola odorata; Extraction; Violaceae; vaby; cytotoxic; genotoxic; cell penetrating; microautoradiography; LC-MS; comet assay; cycloviolacin O2; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : Cyclotides are plant proteins with a unique topology, defined as the cyclic cystine knot motif. The motif endows cyclotides with exceptional chemical and biological stability. They also exhibit a wide range of biological activities including insecticidal, cytotoxic, anti-HIV and antimicrobial effects. READ MORE
