  1. 1. Selection, Maternal Effects and Inbreeding in Reindeer Husbandry

    Author : Lars Rönnegård; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : breeding programme; communal grazing; randombred populations; Rangifer tarandus tarandus; semidomestic reindeer; gene flow; reindeer; animal breeding; gene flow; random mating; breeding methods; genetic inheritance; population structure; extensive husbandry; sweden;

    Abstract : In extensive grazing systems where several owners’ flocks are allowed to mix, selection strategies will also interact, due to gene flow between flocks. The aim of the thesis was to analyse breeding schemes in terms of genetic gain and rate of inbreeding (?F), given the complexity of ownership and interaction of selection strategies within a mixing reindeer population. 2. 2. Computational statistical methods for genotyping biallelic DNA markers from pooled experiments

    Author : Camille Clouard; Carl Nettelblad; Lars Rönnegård; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The information conveyed by genetic markers such as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) has been widely used in biomedical research for studying human diseases, but also increasingly in agriculture by plant and animal breeders for selection purposes. Specific identified markers can act as a genetic signature that is correlated to certain characteristics in a living organism, e. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic Heteroscedasticity for Domestic Animal Traits

    Author : Majbritt Felleki; Erling Strandberg; Lars Rönnegård; Ole Fredslund Christensen; Högskolan Dalarna; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Quantitative genetics; genetic heteroscedasticity of residuals; genetic heterogeneity of environmental variation; genetic heterogeneity of residual variance; double hierarchical generalized linear models; teat count in pigs; litter size in pigs; milk yield in cows; somatic cell count in cows; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis; Komplexa system - mikrodataanalys;

    Abstract : Animal traits differ not only in mean, but also in variation around the mean. For instance, one sire’s daughter group may be very homogeneous, while another sire’s daughters are much more heterogeneous in performance. The difference in residual variance can partially be explained by genetic differences. READ MORE

  4. 4. Methods from Statistical Computing for Genetic Analysis of Complex Traits

    Author : Behrang Mahjani; Sverker Holmgren; Lars Rönnegård; Carl Nettelblad; Silvia Delgado Olabarriaga; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical Computing; QTL mapping; Global Optimization; Linear Mixed Models; Scientific Computing; Beräkningsvetenskap;

    Abstract : The goal of this thesis is to explore, improve and implement some advanced modern computational methods in statistics, focusing on applications in genetics. The thesis has three major directions.First, we study likelihoods for genetics analysis of experimental populations. READ MORE
