  1. 1. Pharmacological control of ciliary activity in the young sea urchin larva : cholinergic and monoaminergic effects and the role of calcium and cyclic nucleotides

    Author : Sherif Soliman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The ciliary activity of the young (prenervous) sea urchin larva, reflected by its swimming intensity, is measured according to a simple method. The changes in ciliary activity from hatching throughout gastrulation commonly show two main peaks coinciding with the two main phases of gastrulation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aspects of priapulid development

    Author : Sofia A Wennberg; Graham Budd; Lars Holmer; Ralf Janssen; Prpic Nikola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Earth sciences; Priapulus caudatus; Priapulida; Ecdysozoa; larval development; embryology; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The phylum Priapulida is a small group of marine worms that is allied with the nematodes, kinorhynchs, loriciferans and nematomorphs in a clade called the Cycloneuralia or Introverta. Together with the arthropods they are generally considered to comprise the Ecdysozoa, a clade of moulting animals. READ MORE

  3. 3. The effects of exposure to microplastics and pollutants on the arthropod microbiome

    Author : Javier Edo Varg; Richard Svanbäck; Jarone Pinhassi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; host microbiota; freshwater; anthropogenic pollution; microplastics; pesticides; pyrethroids; detergents; toxic metals; daphnids; chironomids; water boatmen; damselflies; dragonflies;

    Abstract : Anthropogenic pollution is widespread across various ecosystems. This disturbance can alter the interaction between a host and its associated microbiome, with repercussions for hosts traits such as health, behavior, and host evolution. READ MORE

  4. 4. Signaling pathways in the activation and proliferation of Drosophila melanogaster blood cells

    Author : Carl-Johan Zettervall; Marie Meister; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : innate immunity; cellular immunity; molecular signaling; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The larva of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is an excellent model to study the molecular control of innate cellular immune responses. Cellular responses take place, and can be studied, following infestation of the wasp Leptopilina boulardi. This response includes proliferation and activation (differentiation) of the blood cells (hemocytes). READ MORE

  5. 5. Predator effects on behaviour and life-history of prey

    Author : Tomas Brodin; Frank Johansson; Bradley Anholt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; activity; behaviour; behavioural syndromes; damselfly; development; growth; life-history; predator-prey interaction; predation risk; thinning; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I investigate predator-induced effects on behavioural and life-history characteristics of prey. At any moment a given predator is capable of attacking a small number of prey. READ MORE
