  1. 1. The important role of left atrial function parameters in clinical practice

    Author : Ibadete Bytyci; Michael Y. Henein; Roxy Senior; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left atrial function; Left atrial compliance; left atrial stiffness; Clinical practice; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the role of left atrial function in clinical practice based on the following studies:1)    Determining left atrial (LA) structure and myocardial function measurements that predict pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP).2)    Identifying predictors of exercise capacity in patients with HFpEF and right ventricle (RV) dysfunction. 2. 2. Surgical treatment in chronic aortic regurgitation : Timing, results, prognosis and left ventricular function

    Author : Éva Tamás; Christian Olin; Eva Nylander; Mats Broqvist; Dan Lindblom; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aortic regurgitation; left ventricular function; exercise; physical capacity; echocardiography; Thoracic surgery; Thoraxkirurgi;

    Abstract : Chronic aortic regurgitation (AR) of varying degree affects 13% of men and 8.5% of women. In persons with severe AR, the expected length of life and its quality are influenced. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ventricular rotation and the rotation axis : a new concept in cardiac function

    Author : Ulf Gustafsson; Anders Waldenström; Per Lindqvist; Alan Fraser; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left ventricular function; right ventricular function; rotation; twist; rotation axis; transition plane; ischemia; speckle tracking echocardiography; Cardiology; Kardiologi; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: The twisting motion of the left ventricle (LV), with clockwise rotation at the base and counter clockwise rotation at the apex during systole, is a vital part of LV function. Even though LV rotation has been studied for decades, the rotation pattern has not been described in detail. READ MORE

  4. 4. Left atrial function in health and disease

    Author : Mark Henein; Per Lindqvist; Stellan Mörner; Reidar Winter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left atrium; Doppler echocardiography; atrial interaction; atrial pressure;

    Abstract : The Objectives of this thesis are:1) To study possible atrial interaction in patients with right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to significant pulmonary (PS) and aortic valve stenosis (AS), respectively.2) To assess left atrial (LA) intrinsic myocardial function and its relationship to indirect measures of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). 5. 5. Insights into left atrial response to pressure and volume overload

    Author : Matteo Lisi; Michael Henein; Sergio Mondillo; Lars-Åke Lars; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Keywords Mitral regurgitation; aortic stenosis; speckle tracking echocardiography; heart transplantation; left atrial strain; left ventricualr function; right ventricular function; myocardial fibrosis;

    Abstract : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish the ability of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA) response to pressure and volume overload respectively in aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting LA and right ventricular (RV) fibrosis in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) undergoing heart transplantation (HTx).I demonstrated that assessment of left ventricular (LV) long axis systolic velocity and amplitude of excursion is more sensitive than simple determination of ejection fraction (EF) for revealing the beneficial impact of MR surgery on overall LV systolic performance.
