1. Patient-Specific Finite Element Modeling of the Blood Flow in the Left Ventricle of a Human Heart
Abstract : Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Therefore, numerous studies are undertaken to identify indicators which can be applied to discover cardiac dysfunctions at an early age. READ MORE

2. Strain echocardiography in the critically ill patient : Studies in patients with septic shock and subarachnoid haemorrhage
Abstract : In this thesis, strain echocardiography by two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (2D-STI), was used for the evaluation of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function in critically ill patients with septic shock and subarachnoid haemorrhage. The aims were to: 1) investigate the value of strain echocardiography for the early detection of LV and RV dysfunction not diagnosed with conventional echocardiography in severe sepsis and septic shock, 2) to study the effects of norepinephrine on RV systolic function and pulmonary haemodynamics in patients with norepinephrine-dependent septic shock 3) evaluate the use of strain echocardiography for detection of myocardial injury in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and 4) study the impact of general anaesthesia and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) on RV and LV myocardial longitudinal strain. 3. The important role of left atrial function parameters in clinical practice
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the role of left atrial function in clinical practice based on the following studies:1) Determining left atrial (LA) structure and myocardial function measurements that predict pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP).2) Identifying predictors of exercise capacity in patients with HFpEF and right ventricle (RV) dysfunction. 5. The effect of pressure afterload due to aortic coarctation on left ventricular function in children
Abstract : Background:Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a congenital heart disease which represents a narrowing of the proximal descending aorta, hence increasing pressure afterload to the left ventricle (LV). Conventional treatment of native CoA is surgical repair, however potential recurrence or other related complications e.g. READ MORE
