  1. 21. The Microvasculature of Endogenous and Transplanted Pancreatic Islets : Blood Perfusion, Oxygenation and Islet Endocrine Function

    Author : Richard Olsson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Arne Andersson; Thomas Linn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; diabetes mellitus; pancreatic islets; islet transplantation; vascular engraftment; islet microcirculation; oxygenation; blood flow; protein biosynthesis; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes mellitus affects millions of people worldwide. Islet transplantation is a minimal invasive surgical procedure that restores euglycemia and halts the progression of diabetic complications. However, despite transplantation of islets from multiple donors most patients reverse to hyperglycemia within five years. READ MORE

  2. 22. In-plane Compressive Response of Sandwich Panels

    Author : Anders Lindström; Dan Zenkert; Stefan Hallström; Leif Carlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sandwich; Finite Element Analysis FEA ; Fracture; In-plane compression; Other engineering mechanics; Övrig teknisk mekanik; Structural and vibration physics; Struktur- och vibrationsfysik;

    Abstract : The high specific bending stiffness of sandwich structures can with advantage be used in vehicles to reduce their weight and thereby potentially also their fuel consumption. However, the structure must not only meet the in-service requirements but also provide sufficient protection of the vehicle passengers in a crash situation. READ MORE

  3. 23. Role of Islet Endothelial Cells in β-cell Function and Growth

    Author : Magnus Johansson; Leif Jansson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Lena Holm; Susan Bonner-Weir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The pancreatic islets are collections of endocrine cells, dispersed throughout the pancreas. In adult islets, endocrine cells are closely associated with capillary endothelial cells and receive a high blood perfusion. Transplanted pancreatic islets, on the other hand, have a vascular disturbance, manifested as decreased blood vessel density. READ MORE
