16. Functional Studies of Genes Associated with Muscle Growth in Pigs and Hair Greying in Horses
Abstract : Domestic animals have become very different from their wild ancestors during domestication and animal breeding. This provides a good model to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation. In my thesis I have studied genes affecting two important traits, leanness in pigs and hair greying-associated melanoma in horses. READ MORE

17. Mapping Genes Affecting Phenotypic Traits in Chicken
Abstract : The purpose of gene mapping is to understand the underlying genetics of simple and complex traits like plumage colour and growth. This thesis is based on a cross between the wild ancestor of the modern chicken, the red junglefowl, and a White Leghorn line selected for high egg mass. READ MORE

18. The genetic basis for adaptation in natural populations
Abstract : Many previous studies in evolutionary genetics have been based on few model organisms that can be reared at ease in the laboratory. In contrast, genetic studies of non-model, natural populations are desirable as they provide a wider range of adaptive phenotypes throughout evolutionary timescales and allow a more realistic understanding of how natural selection drives adaptive evolution. 19. Neuronal Networks of Movement : Slc10a4 as a Modulator & Dmrt3 as a Gait-keeper
Abstract : Nerve cells are organized into complex networks that comprise the building blocks of our nervous system. Neurons communicate by transmitting messenger molecules released from synaptic vesicles. Alterations in neuronal circuitry and synaptic signaling contribute to a wide range of neurological conditions, often with consequences for movement. READ MORE

20. Animal genomics – gene discovery and gene characterization
Abstract : This thesis involves two projects. The aim in the first project was to identify genomic regions associated with spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT), which is a hereditary autoimmune disease that affects the obese strain (OS) of chicken, an animal model for human Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT).
