  2. 2. Comparative genomics of the genus Mycobacterium : Genome evolution, phylogeny and diversity

    Author : Phani Rama Krishna Behra; Leif Kirsebom; Bengt Persson; Mikael Rhen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mycobacterial genomes; core gene phylogeny; tRNA and non-coding RNA; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The genus Mycobacterium includes more than 190 species, and many cause severe diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy. According to the "World Health Organization", in year 2019 alone, 10 million people developed TB, and 1.4 million died. READ MORE

  3. 3. Versatile and Antique World of RNA : The Simplicity of RNA Mediated Catalysis

    Author : Ema Kikovska; Leif Kirsebom; Venkat Gopalan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Microbiology; RNA Catalysis; RNase P; Metal ions; tRNA Processing; Ribozyme; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : RNA is the only biological molecule that can function both as a repository of information and as a catalyst. This, together with the ability to self-replicate, led to recognition of RNA as ‘prelude to life’.My work highlights some of the important features of RNA as a catalyst, exemplified by RNase P. 4. 4. Computational Approaches to the Identification and Characterization of Non-Coding RNA Genes

    Author : Pontus Larsson; Anders Virtanen; Leif Kirsebom; Stephen Mount; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ncRNA; snRNA; U1; splice site; alternative splicing; Dictyostelium; nucleotide composition; partial sums; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have emerged as highly diverse and powerful key players in the cell, the range of capabilities spanning from catalyzing essential processes in all living organisms, e.g. protein synthesis, to being highly specific regulators of gene expression. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Kluyveromyces lactis killer toxin is a transfer RNA endonuclease

    Author : Jian Lu; Anders Byström; Leif Kirsebom; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular biology; K. lactis γ-toxin; tRNA endonuclease; modified nucleosides; 5-methoxycarbonylmethyl-2-thiouridine; 5-methylaminomethyl-2-thiouridine; anticodon stem loop; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Killer strains of the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis secrete a heterotrimeric protein toxin (zymocin) to inhibit the growth of sensitive yeasts. The cytotoxicity of zymocin resides in the γ subunit (γ-toxin), however the mechanism of cytotoxicity caused by γ-toxin was previously unknown. READ MORE
