  1. 1. Perspectives on the Biological Role of Human Prostasomes

    Author : Lena Carlsson; Outi Hovatta; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Prostasomes; cryopreservation; human spermatozoa; sperm motility; anti- prostasome antibodies; PC-3 cells; Bacillus megaterium; antibacterial; antisperm antibodies; complement activation; sperm agglutination; infertility; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Prostasomes are extracellularly occurring organelles which are secreted in human semen by the prostate gland. Prostasomes have several known biological activities, but their physiological function is still unclear. In this thesis some new aspects were studied on the biological role of the prostasomes. 2. 2. The muscle cytoskeleton of mice and men : Structural remodelling in desmin myopathies

    Author : Lena Carlsson; Lars-Eric Thornell; Anders Arnér; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; desmin; nestin; synemin; paranemin; plectin; αB-crystallin; skeletal muscle; heart muscle; myotendinous junction; motor endplate; costamere; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : The muscle fibre cytoskeleton of skeletal and heart muscle cells is composed mainly of intermediate filaments (IFs), that surround the myofibrils and connect the peripheral myofibrils with the sarcolemma and the nuclear membrane. Desmin is the first muscle specific IF protein to be produced in developing muscles and is the main IF protein in mature muscles. READ MORE

  3. 3. ’’... is it hunger or superabundance that has here become creative?’’ : Nietzsche on Creativity in Art and Life

  4. 4. Cellular design of heparan sulfate : The NDST enzymes and their regulation

    Author : Pernilla Carlsson; Lena Kjellén; Tarja Kinnunen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heparan sulfate; heparin; proteoglycan; NDST; PAPS; Golgi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are proteins with long, unbranched heparan sulfate (HS) polysaccharide chains attached to them. They are found on cell surfaces and in basement membranes where they exert their action by interacting with a wide range of enzymes and signaling molecules and are thereby involved in a range of various processes both during embryonic development and in adult physiology. 5. 5. The influence of gender and psychological distress on adherence to prescribed medication

    Author : Lena Thunander Sundbom; Kerstin Bingefors; Dag Isacson; Anne-Liis von Knorring; Marianne Carlsson; Carin Muhr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medication adherence; reasons; attitudes; gender; anxiety symptoms; depression symptoms; Farmakoepidemiologi; Pharmacoepidemiology;

    Abstract : Background: The lack of adherence to drug therapy is a major problem; it can contribute to significant deterioration of disease and increased health-care costs. Improving medication adherence is a big challenge; there is no simple solution to the problem. It is thus essential to improve our knowledge of non-adherence (NA) and its causes. READ MORE
