  1. 11. Escape flight in butterflies

    Author : Maria Almbro; Cecilia Kullberg; Ronald Rutowski; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flight; Lepidoptera; gamete load; lipid accumulation; predation risk; hibernation; Biology; Biologi; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : Flight is considered to be the overarching reason for the enormous diversity and world-wide abundance of insects. Not only does flight enable great distances to be covered and new areas to be colonised, flying has also evolved to be important in most adult life-history characteristics from reproduction to anti-predator strategies. 2. 12. Body Size Evolution in Butterflies

    Author : David Berger; Karl Gotthard; Wolf Blanckenhorn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Body size evolution; age- and size at maturity; life history theory; fecundity; predation risk; juvenile growth rate; Lepidoptera; Biology; Biologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Life history research deals with the scheme of resource partitioning to a wide spectra of processes and the trade-offs shaping these events. One of the most fundamental life history trade-offs is the one of at which age- and size an organism should start to reproduce; reaching a large size at maturity is often advantageous in terms of high adult survival and reproductive potential, while to attain a larger size the organisms must prolong juvenile development which is assumed costly in terms of mortality. 3. 13. The evolution of territoriality in butterflies

    Author : Martin Bergman; Christer Wiklund; Ronald Rutowski; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : territoriality; Lepidoptera; sexual selection; mating success; mate locating behaviour; resource-holding potential; motivation; courtship solicitation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Competition over mating opportunities is a conspicuous characteristic of animal behaviour. In many butterfly species the males establish territories in places advantageous for encountering females. This thesis addresses questions about how territoriality has evolved and is maintained in butterflies. READ MORE

  4. 14. Ecology and conservation of the moth Dysauxes ancilla

    Author : Per-Eric Betzholtz; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; marc-recapture; population viability; fluctuating asymmetry; genetic status; larval feeding; movements; endangered species; conservation; outpost population; Lepidoptera; Dysauxes ancilla;

    Abstract : The ecology of the moth Dysauxes ancilla was studied in the only Swedish breeding area at Beijershamn, situated on the Baltic island of Öland. The population is a northern outpost, separated from the species´ continous distribution area in middle- and southeast Europe. READ MORE

  5. 15. Ecology of red admiral migration

    Author : Oskar Brattström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; Lepidoptera; migration patterns; migration; genetic structure; AFLP; lipid content; Inachis io; stable isotopes; orientation; navigation; weather; Animal ecology; red admiral; Vanessa atalanta; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a migratory butterfly that can be found in North America, North Africa, Europe and some parts of Asia. In Europe the main part of the population spend winter in the Mediterranean region and the following spring leave this area to breed further to the north. READ MORE
