  1. 1. NMR as a tool in drug research : Structure elucidation of peptidomimetics and pilicide-chaperone complexes

    Author : Mattias Hedenström; Jan Jan Kihlberg; Ingmar Sethson; Michael P. Williamson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic chemistry; NMR; structure calculations; peptidomimetics; desmopressin; Leu-enkephalin; chemical shift mapping; pilicides; chaperones; urinary tract infections.; Organisk kemi; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : In the last decades NMR spectroscopy has become an invaluable tool both in academic research and in the pharmaceutical industry. This thesis describes applications of NMR spectroscopy in biomedicinal research for structure elucidation of biologically active peptides and peptidomimetics as well as in studies of ligand-protein interactions. 2. 2. Synthesis of β-turn and pyridine based peptidomimetics

    Author : David Blomberg; Jan Kihlberg; Kay Brickmann; Torbjörn Frejd; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peptidomimetics; beta-turn; beta-strand; pyridine scaffold; Grignard exchange reaction; SNAr reaction; thrombin inhibitor; Leu-enkephalin.; Organic synthesis; Organisk syntes;

    Abstract : Despite the unfavorable pharmacokinetic properties associated with peptides, they are still of great interest in drug development due to a multitude of interesting biological functions. The development of peptidomimetics strives to maintain or improve the biological activity of a peptide concurrently with removing the unwanted properties. READ MORE

  3. 3. Galanin and Leu-enkephalin in the rat : with special reference to adjuvant arthritis

    Author : Qinyang Wu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In these studies, the tissue and cellular distribution of Galanin and Leu-enkephalin were demonstrated in normal bone and joints. Furthermore, tissue levels of Galanin and Leuenkephalin were also studied in the ankles and the spinal cord of arthritic rats. We used immunoeletronmicroscopy (iEM), to study cells and tissue compartments. READ MORE

  4. 4. The Impact of Nandrolone Decanoate on Neuropeptidergic Mechanisms Related to Cognition, Aggression, Reward and Dependence

    Author : Kristina Magnusson; Fred Nyberg; Mathias Hallberg; Santi Mario Spampinato; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anabolic androgenic steroids; Nandrolone decanoate; Substance P; Dynorphin A; KOP receptor; Prodynorphin; Radioimmunoassay; Autoradiography; Morris water maze; PCR; Central nervous system; Biological research on drug dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological Research on Drug Dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : The abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is becoming increasingly common and may result in a range of physiological as well as psychological effects such as altered behavior in terms of increased aggression, cognitive dysfunction and addictive behavior. AAS comprise testosterone and its derivatives, of which nandrolone is one of the more common. READ MORE

  5. 5. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning

    Author : Johan Sandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : opioid; dynorphin; nociceptin; hippocampus; learning; memory; acetylcholine; HPLC; microinjections;

    Abstract : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning.
