2. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia : Studies from genetics to epidemiology with focus on the impact of different treatments
Abstract : The progress in our understanding of the biology and pathophysiology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as well as the development of new treatments, necessitates additional research on; (i) the impact of different therapies within subgroups of CLL patients, (ii) solid epidemiological data on the prevalence of CLL and on comorbidities within the CLL population, and (iii) new means of prognostication, as the value of traditional prognostic markers is uncertain when applied to new treatments. In paper I we studied the efficacy of chemo(immuno)therapy in stereotyped subsets #1 and #2. 3. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia : Studies on cardiovascular disease, biomarkers and subclones
Abstract : The treatment of Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is rapidly changing, with targeted therapies, e.g. Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKi), entering the frontline and relapse setting. However, BTKis have significant adverse effects, most notably cardiovascular disease (CVD). READ MORE

5. Pharmacology and resistance mechanisms of nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase II interactive agents : studies on human leukemia cells with a focus on cross-resistance
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to elucidate mechanisms of action and resistance of clinically relevant nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase interactive agents in human leukemia cell lines and leukernia cells isolated from peripheral blood of leukemia patients. Interactions and cross-resistance patterns of these different cytotoxic drug families were also studied since these drugs are usually administrated in combination in the clinic. READ MORE
