  1. 6. Leukocyte activation in newborns in relation to prenatal stress

    Author : Elham Yektaei-Karin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this project is to describe the pattern of innate immunity responses at birth with focus on the recruitment of leukocytes such as eosinophils and neutrophils and their content of cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide LL-37 associated to different degrees of fetal stress and delivery modes. We know that delivery is associated to fetal stress including release of cortisol and cathecolamines. READ MORE

  2. 7. Nitric oxide : An ally in extracorporeal circulation?

    Author : Vilyam Melki; Jan Borowiec; Örjan Friberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Simulated extracorporeal circulation; Inflammation; Nitric oxide; Leukocyte activation; Staphylococcus aureus; Glyceryl trinitrate; Postoperative infection; Thorax Surgery; Thoraxkirurgi;

    Abstract : Many complications associated with heart surgery are due to the negative effects of extracorporeal circulation (ECC). Some of these complications may be attributed to ECC-induced activation of inflammation and coagulation pathways. READ MORE

  3. 8. Kinin System Activation in Vasculitis

    Author : Robin Kahn; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; kinin receptors; inflammation; vasculitis; proteinase 3; neutophils; anti-neutrophil-cytoplasmic antibodies; Kinin;

    Abstract : The kinin system is activated when high-molecular-weight kininogen (HK) is cleaved by plasma kallikrein thus generating bradykinin. Bradykinin is a potent proinflammatory peptide that induces plasma leakage, blood pressure drop, liberation of inflammatory cytokines and pain. READ MORE

  4. 9. Mechanisms and Therapeutic Interventions of Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction (IBMIR)

    Author : Helena Johansson; Bo Nilsson; Olle Korsgren; Kristina Nilsson-Ekdahl; Tomas Lindahl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; Diabetes; Islet transplantation; Islets of Langerhans; Coagulation activation; Complement activation; IBMIR; Tissue factor; Low molecular weight dextran sulfate; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Intraportal transplantation of isolated islets of Langerhans is a procedure approaching clinical acceptance as a treatment for patients with type I diabetes mellitus. One major problem with this treatment is that large amounts of cells are lost at the time of infusion into the portal vein, resulting in a low level of engraftment of the islets. READ MORE

  5. 10. Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease: Risk Factors and Outcome Predictors with special reference to the role of leukocytes and inflammatory mediators

    Author : Ali Mohamed Elneihoum; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transient ischemic attack.; stroke; risk factors; recurrence; mortality; leukocyte; epidemiology; cytokines; Atherosclerosis; cerebral ischemia; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Ischemic cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is usually a consequence of atherosclerosis and is the commonest cause of stroke. The identification of risk factors and outcome predictors and the initiation of preventive measures constitute the cornerstone of efforts to reduce the risk of stroke and improve outcome. READ MORE
