6. Tunable surfaces : using polyoxoniobates and -tantalates as molecular building blocks
Abstract : This thesis describes and explains the use of aqueous polyoxometalates (POMs), as molecular building blocks in the fabrication of tunable solid-state materials, such as thin films. Microwave irradiation in the synthesis of Nb10, Nb6 and Ta6 is a rapid and efficient alternative to conventional hydrothermal methods, while offering equal – if not greater yields – of product. 7. AlN Thin Film Electroacoustic Devices
Abstract : Recently, the enormous growth in personal communications systems (PCS), satellite communication and various other forms of wireless data communication has made analogue frequency control a key issue as the operation frequency increases to the low/medium GHz range. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) electroacoustic devices are widely used today in a variety of applications both in consumer electronics as well as in specialized scientific and military equipment where frequency control is required. 8. Nanosecond tandem optical parametric oscillators for mid-infrared generation
Abstract : This thesis discusses a new scheme for generating radiation in the mid infrared spectral region, especially the 3.5-5 µm range. The scheme uses established Nd3+-lasers at 1.06 µm and down conversion in nonlinear optical crystals. READ MORE

9. Development of Models, Methods, and Materiel for Deep Tissue Imaging using Light, Ultrasound, and Spectral-Hole Burning
Abstract : The medical imaging technique called “ultrasound optical tomography” (UOT) entails light scattered in tissue that is given spatial information by interacting with an ultrasound field, thus allowing for molecular information to be imaged with ultrasonic resolution. This thesis discusses how UOT can be implemented, with most attention put toward the implementation using spectral-hole-burning filters (SHF) in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. READ MORE
