  1. 1. Advances in Membrane Protein Structural Biology: Lipidic Sponge Phase Crystallization, Time-Resolved Laue Diffraction and Serial Femtosecond Crystallography

    Author : Linda C Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Serial femtosecond crystallography; Lipidic sponge phase crystallization; Membrane protein crystallization; X-ray free-electron laser;

    Abstract : Membrane proteins carry out many essential tasks in cells such as signaling and transport, or function as electron carriers in photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The aim of this thesis has been to develop new and improve existing techniques for elucidating the structure and function of membrane proteins. READ MORE

  2. 2. Selenocysteine in proteins : properties and biotechnological use

    Author : Linda Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Selenocysteine; recombinant selenoprotein production; thioredoxin reductase; enzymology; protein labeling; mite allergy; mouse model;

    Abstract : Selenocysteine (Sec), the 21st amino acid, exists in all kingdoms of life and has unique biochemical properties, such as high electrophilicity and low pKa. The highly increased reactivity of selenoenzymes compared to their sulfur-containing cysteine-dependent homologs is generally regarded as the evolutionary reason for having selenoproteins. READ MORE

  3. 3. A Mediterranean dietary intervention study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Linda Hagfors; Gunnar Johansson; Margaretha Haugen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Rheumatoid arthritis; Mediterranean diet; fatty acids; antioxidants; diet history interview; biological markers; doubly labelled water; energy expenditure;

    Abstract : Case control studies have shown that a high consumption of fish, olive oil, and cooked vegetables is associated with a decreased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These foods have a central position in the traditional Cretan Mediterranean diet, and it has been suggested that dietary factors contribute to the low prevalence of RA in Mediterranean countries. 4. 4. The Impact of Growth Hormone and Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) on Systems Related to Cognition

    Author : Jenny Johansson; Mathias Hallberg; Fred Nyberg; Linda Fryklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth Hormone; Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate; GABAB; Opioids; Insulin-like growth factor 1; Rats; Central Nervous System; Autoradiography; Radioimmunoassay; ELISA; Water Maze; Open Field; Biological Research on Drug Dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : Drug dependence is a serious and increasing problem in our society, especially among adolescents. The use of the large variety of substances available can result in a range of physiological and psychological adverse effects on individuals and negative consequences on the society overall. 5. 5. Oral microbiota in relation to host traits, environment, and dental caries

    Author : Linda Eriksson; Pernilla Lif Holgerson; Ingegerd Johansson; Anders Esberg; Peter Lingström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dental caries; NGS; S. mutans; sugar; sweet; diet; taste preference; adolescents; allele variation; SLC2A4; microbiota; saliva; tooth biofilm; kariologi; Cariology;

    Abstract : Background: Dental caries still appears at high prevalence worldwide. Disease distribution is skewed with more disease in socio-economically weak groups. However, also in populations considered as “low caries” there is a significant fraction with continuous disease development. READ MORE
