  1. 1. The diagnostic potential of the He I D3 spectral line in the solar atmosphere

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University

    Author : Tine Libbrecht; Stockholms universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sun; Line formation; Chromosphere; Spectro-Polarimetry; Flares; Reconnection; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : The research question of my PhD is in a way a simple one: what can observations of the He I D3 line teach us about the solar chromosphere? This optical spectral line at 5876 Å is generally formed in the upper chromosphere, and is sensitive to the local magnetic field. The He I D3 line is also indirectly sensitive to heating of the transition region and corona, since it is resulting from a transition that occurs between levels in the triplet system of neutral helium. 2. 2. Consensus formation in the Deffuant model

    University dissertation from Göteborg : Chalmers University of Technology

    Author : Timo Hirscher; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Deffuant model; consensus formation; opinion dynamics; sociophysics; vector-valued opinions; percolation;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with a mathematical model used in the context of social interactionin large groups, introduced by Deffuant et al. in 2000. Each individualholds an opinion and shares it with others in random pairwise encounters. READ MORE

  3. 3. Responding Model Membranes. Lipid Phase Behaviour, Domain Formation and Permeability

    University dissertation from Physical Chemistry 1, Lund University

    Author : Emma Sparr; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Water and solute flux; Gradients; Monolayer; Two-dimensional crystals; Line activiy; Osmotic stress; Interlamellar forces; Phospholipid-cholesterol interactions; Phase transitions; Bilayer stack; Stratum corneum; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the interplay between the lipid phase behaviour, domain formation and the permeability of bilayer membranes. An essential part of this work has been the understanding of the phase transitions and equilibrium properties of lipid bilayers. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the Chemical Composition of Metal-Poor Stars Impact of Stellar Granulation and Departures from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium on the Formation of Spectral Lines

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Remo Collet; Uppsala universitet.; [2006]
    Keywords : Astronomy; late-type stars; stellar abundances; stellar atmospheres; spectral line formation; convection; hydrodynamics; Galactic chemical evolution; Astronomi;

    Abstract : The information about the chemical compositions of stars is encoded in their spectra. Accurate determinations of these compositions are crucial for our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and Galactic chemical evolution. READ MORE

  5. 5. Water and hydroxyl in luminous infrared galaxies: Spectroscopic observations and modelling

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Niklas Falstad; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ISM: molecules; Galaxies: individual: Zw 049.057; Line: formation; Galaxies: ISM; Submillimeter: galaxies; Infrared: galaxies;

    Abstract : Many luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 Lsun emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscuring material in these regions, the nature of the nuclear power source cannot be determined using direct observations in the optical or IR. READ MORE
