11. Maximum likelihood detection for the linear MIMO channel
Abstract : this thesis the problem of maximum likelihood (ML) detection for the linear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is considered. The thesis investigates two algorithms previously proposed in the literature for implementing the ML detector, namely semide nite relaxation and sphere decoding. READ MORE

12. Absorbed Dose Determination and Characteristics of Degraded Electron Beams: Application to Intraoperative Radiation Therapy
Abstract : The aim of this work was to quantify limitations of and uncertainties in commonly used dosimetric techniques for relative absorbed dose determination in degraded electron beams, such as those encountered in intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and small-electron-field radiotherapy. Three different detector types were investigated with regard to measurements of output factors and relative absorbed dose distributions: (1) a parallel-plate ionization chamber, (2) a p-type silicon diode detector and (3) a diamond detector. 13. Reduced Receivers for Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling and General Linear Channels
Abstract : Fast and reliable data transmission together with high bandwidth efficiency are important design aspects in a modern digital communication system. Many different approaches exist but in this thesis bandwidth efficiency is obtained by increasing the data transmission rate with the faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) framework while keeping a fixed power spectral density (PSD). 14. Luminosity determination and simulation of the LUCID detector at the ATLAS experiment
Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to describe how the luminosity can be measured in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Luminosity is a fundamental quantity that is used in most physics studies at the LHC. For example in order to measure cross sections. READ MORE

15. Development of the CHICSi multi detector system and experiments with its auxiliary systems
Abstract : Two new detector systems are described, including several new detector concepts. They areintended for use in heavy ion reaction experiments at the CELSIUS storage ring of the TheSvedberg Laboratory in Uppsala. In addition, results of experiments are presented, togetherwith theoretical calculations. READ MORE
