  1. 21. Minimally-invasive breast interventions : methods for high yield, low risk, precision biopsy and curative thermal ablation

    Author : Kai-Uwe Schässburger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Advances in medical imaging and the introduction of population-based screening programs have increased the detection rate and overall proportion of small breast tumors. In addition, progress in technology and medical science, in combination with efforts to minimize morbidity, have resulted in the emergence of minimally invasive image-guided interventional procedures for both diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.     Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dupuytren contracture; Collagenase; Hand surgery; Dupuytren disease; Prevalence;

    Abstract : Purpose To study the epidemiology of Dupuytren disease and evaluate treatment outcome of collagenase injections using a modified method.Patients and methods Paper I is a register-based study. From the general population of Skåne region (1. READ MORE

  3. 23. Women's experience of pain and pain relief in assisted reproductive technology

    Author : Ann-Louise Gejervall; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : oocyte retrieval; pain relief; randomized controlled trial; pain; fertilization rate; embryo development; Visual Analogue Scale;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate and compare different methods for pain relief during oocyte retrieval and to study women’s expectations and experiences of pain during oocyte retrieval in conjunction with in vitro fertilization. Paper I, an open prospective randomized controlled trial, including 160 women had the primary aims of comparing the pain relieving effects of electro-acupuncture and conventional analgesia, comprising opiates, in conjunction with oocyte retrieval, and to compare post-operative well-being between groups. 4. 24. Conductance-based principles of neuronal firing and excitability

    Author : Hugo Zeberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The brain is an electrical organ whose activity is determined by the flow of ions across cell membranes. As such, the conductances that control the ion flux is a key to our understanding of the nervous system. Neurons process information by their ability to rapidly depolarize and fire action potentials. 5. 25. Methods for measurement of vocal fold vibration and viscoelasticity

    Author : Hans Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : High-speed video imaging; kymography; acoustic analysis; vocal fold vibration; glottal edge; glottal area; laser; mucosal wave; triangulation; vocal fold; vocal fold length; vocal fold width; vocal fold strain; non-invasive; vocal fold scarring; air pulse stimulation;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the thesis was to develop new methods for analysis of vocal fold vibrations and viscoelasticity and to test them in human subjects. In Study I the onset of vibration and irregular vocal fold vibration was examined with laryngoscopy using a high-speed camera at a frame rate of about 2000 images/sec. READ MORE
