1. Northern Permafrost Region Soil Carbon Dynamics since the Last Glacial Maximum : a terrestrial component in the glacial to interglacial carbon cycle
Abstract : At the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), after ~100,000 years of relatively cold temperatures and progressively lower atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, CO2 levels reached ~180 ppm, which is less than half of what we see today in a much warmer world (~400 ppm). Although much of this increase since the LGM is due to human-induced emissions, about 100 ppm of this increase can be attributed to natural variations seen over glacial to interglacial cycles. 2. Source and age of late Quaternary loess deposits in Europe
Abstract : Atmospheric mineral dust is a fundamental component of the Earth’s climate system, with dust both responding to and driving climate change. This close link between dust and climate is recorded in archives of past dust activity, which show that abrupt 101-3 yr shifts in temperature during the last glacial period were accompanied with fluctuations in dust activity. 3. Provenance of the pre-Quaternary aeolian dust deposits of East Asia
Abstract : Atmospheric mineral dust is a key component in the climate system, but its effect on and response to climate changes are poorly understood, especially over long timescales. This thesis investigates the sources of late Paleogene and Neogene dust deposits that formed under warmer-than-present global climates in the northern Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) region in mid-latitude East Asia. 4. Past environment and sediment dynamics in the Black Sea-Caspian Sea region from Southern Russian loess sequences
Abstract : Loess deposits are excellent past climate and environment archives and contain records of aeolian mineral dust accumulation. Loess deposits stretch across Eurasia and sequences along the Lower Volga in the Northern Caspian lowland in the South East European Plain represent a key link between European and Asian loess.
