  1. 1. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Author : Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility;

    Abstract : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 2. 2. Nuclear magnetic resonance and microcirculation: The influence of pulsatile brain-tissue motion on measurements of intravoxel incoherent motion and assessment of haemodynamics using exo- and endogenous tracers

    Author : Ronnie Wirestam; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diagnostic radiology; cortical activation; diffusion; tumor; tumour; ischemic stroke; ischaemic stroke; tracer kinetics; bolus tracking; phase mapping; brain motion; intracranial dynamics; blood flow; haemodynamics; vascularity; MRS; perfusion; MRI; magnetic resonance; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Abstract : In this project, the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy in studies of microcirculation and haemodynamics was evaluated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of human pulsatile brain-tissue movements in healthy individuals, relevant for the understanding of the cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) circulation and the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus, were thoroughly investigated. 3. 3. Evaluation of Automatic Quantification Programs for Myocardial Perfusion SPECT using Monte Carlo Simulations

    Author : Henrik Hussein El Ali; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; medical instrumentation; Severity; Monte Carlo; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; Myocardial perfusion; Extent;

    Abstract : Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which the blood supply to the myocardium is partially or completely blocked due to plaque build-up in the artery wall. Myocardial SPECT imaging is a commonly used technique to assess the blood flow to the myocardium and the function of the heart. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development and evaluation of an independent system for absorbed dose calculations in radiotherapy

    Author : Stefan Johnsson; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; medicinsk instrumentering; tomografi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; tomography; medical instrumentation; radiology; Clinical physics; cancer; Cytologi; onkologi; cancerology; oncology; Cytology; PDA; mini-phantom; in-air equivalence; primary kerma; transmission measurement; stopping power ratio; entrance dose; beam quality; quality control; error prevention; monitor unit calculation; radiation therapy; dose calculation;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to develop, implement and evaluate an independent system with which to calculate the absorbed dose, delivered by high-energy X-ray beams, to the prescription point and the depth of dose maximum. The introduction of such a system in the clinical routine may help ensure high-quality treatment and avoidance of errors which may jeopardise the clinical outcome of the treatment (i. READ MORE

    Author : Lena M Jönsson; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tomografi; Klinisk fysiologi; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics; crypt cells; intestine; radionuclide; scintillation camera; sestamibi; activity quantification; conjugate view method; Monte Carlo simulation; internal dosimetry; Nuclear medicine; radiobiology; Nukleärmedicin; radiobiologi; medicinsk instrumentering; radiologi;

    Abstract : Radionuclide therapy requires patient-specific planning of the absorbed dose to target volumes, in most cases tumours, in order to achieve an expected biological effect, taking into account that the absorbed doses to normal organs and tissues should be kept as low as reasonably achievable. Therefore, the calculation of absorbed doses has to be as accurate as possible. READ MORE
