  1. 6. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth

    Author : Lars Björklund; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiration; Artificial; Pediatrics; Pediatri; Respiratory Function Tests; Pulmonary Surfactants; Newborn; Respiratory Distress Syndrome; Infant; Premature; Animals;

    Abstract : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout. 2. 7. Development in children born very preterm after intrauterine growth restriction with abnormal fetal blood flow

    Author : Eva Morsing; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; umbilical artery; cognitive development; lung function; cardiovascular function; very preterm infants; Doppler ultrasound; Intrauterine growth restriction;

    Abstract : Delivery of fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with abnormal umbilical artery blood flow in the second trimester represents a clinical dilemma. So far, no evidence based management protocols are available adressing when to deliver these fetuses. READ MORE

  3. 8. Anorectal malformations - their impact on early phases in life

    Author : Pernilla Stenström; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; perineal ultrasonography; sphincter anatomy; pelvic floor; appendicostomy; adolesence; constipation; soiling; fecal incontinence; quality of life; anorectal malformations;

    Abstract : Abstract: Background : Anorecta l malformation s (ARM) occur in 4: 10000 newborn children with the gender distribut ion 1:1.5 females:males. The reconstruction of ARM, posterior sagiccal anorectal plasty (PSARP), was implemenred worldwide in the late 1980s and therefore the follow-ups are limited. READ MORE

  4. 9. Screening Detected Celiac Disease in Children

    Author : Charlotta Webb; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Celiac disease; screening; prevalence; small-bowel biopsy; enteropathy; transglutaminase; gluten-free diet; adherence;

    Abstract : Background: The prevalence of celiac disease (CD) is estimated to be around 1%, but most CD cases are undiagnosed. Sweden experienced an epidemic of clinically detected celiac disease in children younger than 2 years of age, partly due to changes in infant feeding practices, were the amount of gluten and age at introduction was changed. 5. 10. Preterm intraventricular cerebral hemorrhage: role of cell-free hemoglobin

    Author : Alex Adusei Agyemang; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Preterm birth; Haptoglobin; Alpha 1 microglobulin; cerebellar hypoplasia; periventricular white matter; cell-free hemoglobin;

    Abstract : Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants continues to be a major clinical problem associated with neurodevelopmental abnormalities manifested by cognitive, behavioral, attentional, social and motor deficits. Hypothesis and aims: The central thesis is that the cytotoxicity of extravasated blood and of consequently released cell-free hemoglobin(Hb) is pivotal for the pathophysiological events causally involved in brain injury.
