1. Phase stability and defect structures in (Ti,Al)N hard coatings
Abstract : This study highlights the role of nitrogen vacancies and defect structures in engineering hard coatings with enhanced phase stability and mechanical properties for high temperature applications. Titanium aluminum nitride (Ti,Al)N based materials in the form of thin coatings has remained as an outstanding choice for protection of metal cutting tools due to its superior oxidation resistance and high-temperature wear resistance. 2. Effects of confinement and initiation delay on fragmentation and waste rock compaction : Results from small scale tests
Abstract : Sub-level caving (SLC) is classified as a mass mining method and there is an increasing interest in its application worldwide and in a very wide range of geotechnical environments. Design of sub-level blasting rounds and optimization has become more important now when the sizes of the blasting rings have become larger. READ MORE

3. Polymer Actuators for Micro Robotic Applications
Abstract : In this thesis a multilayer actuator structure is developed for the I-SWARM project. In order to build an energy efficient and low voltage actuator system for the 3x3x3 mm3 robot, the resonance drive mode in combination with a ten layer multilayer structure build upon the most suitable substrate material was used. 4. Development and Applications of Tracking of Pellet Streams
Abstract : The development of a system for optical tracking of frozen hydrogen microsphere targets (pellets) was done. It is intended for the upcoming hadron physics experiment PANDA at FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. READ MORE

5. Quality aspects in direct shear testing of rock joints
Abstract : The stability of rock masses is influenced by the occurrence of rock joints. Therefore, the shear strength of rock joints must be considered in dimensioning of underground constructions. READ MORE
