1. Neuron-to-neuron propagation of neurodegenerative proteins; relation to degradative systems
Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are defined by neurodegeneration and accumulations of misfolded proteins that spread through the brain in a well characterized manner. In AD these accumulations consist mainly of β-amyloid (Aβ) and tau, while in PD, α-synuclein (α-syn) make up the characteristic lewy pathology. READ MORE

2. Membrane-bound proteins : Characterization, evolution, and functional analysis
Abstract : Alpha-helical transmembrane proteins are important components of many essential cell processes including signal transduction, transport of molecules across membranes, protein and membrane trafficking, and structural and adhesion activities, amongst others. Their involvement in critical networks makes them the focus of interest in investigating disease pathways, as candidate drug targets, and in evolutionary analyses to identify homologous protein families and possible functional activities. 3. Molecular-dynamics simulations of polymeric surfaces for biomolecular applications
Abstract : In-vitro diagnostics plays a very important role in the present healthcare system. It consists of a large variety of medical devices designed to diagnose a medical condition by measuring a target molecule in a sample, such as blood or urine. READ MORE

4. Theoretical studies of blue copper proteins
Abstract : In this thesis, a critical investigation is presented about the role of mechanical strain for the electron-transfer properties of the blue copper proteins. It has been found that the structure of a realistic model complex of the oxidised blue-copper active site, optimised in vacuum with the B3LYP method, has the same trigonal cupric geometry as in the protein.
