  1. 1. Development of titanium-copper alloys for dental applications

    Author : Lee Fowler; Caroline Öhman-Mägi; Håkan Engqvist; Susanne Norgren; Eduard Hryha; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Titanium; copper; antibacterial; Ti2Cu; biomaterials; Staphylococcus epidermidis; MC3T3 cells;

    Abstract : Titanium alloys find wide application in the medical implants industry, which includes areas of orthopaedic and dental implants. The reason for the popularity of the material is high mechanical strength, low density, and reported growth of bone onto the material, as well as corrosion resistance. READ MORE

  2. 2. The calcitonin gene family of peptides : receptor expression and effects on bone cells

    Author : Susanne Granholm; Ulf Lerner; Pernilla Lundberg; Göran Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CT family of peptides; osteoclast differentiation; bone resorption; CTR; CRLR; RAMPs; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The calcitonin gene family of peptides consists of calcitonin (CT), two calcitonin gene related peptides (α-CGRP, β-CGRP), adrenomedullin (ADM), amylin (AMY), three calcitonin receptor activating peptides (CRSP1-3) and intermedin/adrenomedullin2 (IMD). These peptides bind to one of two G protein -coupled receptors, the calcitonin receptor (CTR) or the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CRLR). READ MORE

  3. 3. The neuropeptide VIP and the IL-6 family of cytokines in bone : effects on bone resorption, cytokine expression and receptor signalling in osteoblasts and bone marrow stromal cells

    Author : Emma Persson; Ulf Lerner; Andreas Kindmark; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; osteoblast; bone resorption; cytokines; IL-6; neuropeptides; VIP; transcription factor; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Bone tissue is continuously degraded and rebuilt to respond to the needs of the body. Cells of the osteoblast lineage are responsible for the formation of bone, whereas the resorption of bone tissue is carried out by osteoclasts. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bio-Nano Interactions : Synthesis, Functionalization and Characterization of Biomaterial Interfaces

    Author : Yixiao Cai; Xia Wei; Mikael Karlsson; Martin Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Bioactive surfaces; nanocrystalline diamond; hydroxyapatite; protein secondary structure; protein absorption; auditory neurons; single crystalline rutile; nano morphology; surface functionalisation; in vitro biomineralisation; translucent nano-ceramics; bio-window material; material characterisation.; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot materialvetenskap; Engineering Science with specialization in Materials Science;

    Abstract : Current strategies for designing biomaterials involve creating materials and interfaces that interact with biomolecules, cells and tissues.  This thesis aims to investigate several bioactive surfaces, such as nanocrystalline diamond (NCD), hydroxyapatite (HA) and single crystalline titanium dioxide, in terms of material synthesis, surface functionalization and characterization.
