  1. 1. Regeneration in the adult brain after focal cerebral ischemia : exploration of neurogenesis and angiogenesis

    Author : Wei Jiang; Jukka Jolkkonen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; neurogenesis; angiogenesis; rats; mice; gliosis; BrdU; CBF; protein synthesis; ATP; penumbra; reperfusion; VEGF; 3-D confocal; photothrombosis; MCAO; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : Background: Ischemic stroke ranks as the third major cause of clinical mortality and the leading cause of handicap in adults. Each year, stroke occurs in about 30,000 Swedes. The severity of an acute ischemic stroke depends mainly on the degree and duration of local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) reduction. READ MORE

  2. 2. Long-term neurogenesis after stroke in the adult rat brain

    Author : Pär Thored; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; embryologi människa ; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Utvecklingsbiologi; teratologi; embryology human ; ontogeny; Development biology; teratology; Stroke; Stem Cells; Neurogenesis; neurofysiologi; Clinical biology; Klinisk biologi; Neurologi; neuropsykologi;

    Abstract : Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability for which there is no treatment for functional recovery. Following stroke, striatal neurogenesis is increased, with newly formed neuroblasts migrating towards the damage. This response has so far been considered acute and transient. READ MORE

  3. 3. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 4. 4. Methods of Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics for Astronomy

    Author : Ralf Flicker; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adaptive optics; anisoplanatism; laser guide stars; performance estimation; wavefront reconstruction; extremely large telescopes; optics; Electromagnetism; Elektromagnetism; acoustics; Astronomy; akustik; space research; optik; multi-conjugate; cosmic chemistry; Astronomi; rymdvetenskap; kosmisk kemi; Fysicumarkivet A:2003:Flicker;

    Abstract : This work analyses several aspects of multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) for astronomy. The research ranges from fundamental and technical studies for present-day MCAO projects, to feasibility studies of high-order MCAO instruments for the extremely large telescopes (ELTs) of the future. 5. 5. Experimental Stroke and Neurotrophins: Regulation, function and gene transfer of neurotrophins in rat and mouse models of focal cerebral ischemia

    Author : Gunnar Andsberg; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; animal behaviour; striatum; stereology; immunohistochemistry; focal cerebral ischemia; nerve growth factors; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Stroke caused by focal cerebral ischemia is a major cause of death and neurological disability in humans. The forebrain region most commonly affected by ischemic incidents is that supplied by the middle cerebral artery. READ MORE
