  1. 1. Vascular effects of neuropeptides and UDP-β-S and alterations after stroke

    Author : André Erdling; Neurokirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to investigate the changes in vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) and P2Y6-mediated signaling following experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). VIP and CGRP are among the most powerful vasodilators known to man while P2Y6 mediates strong vasoconstriction in cerebral blood vessels. READ MORE

  2. 2. Brain glycine receptors as a common target for alcohol and the relapse-preventing drug acamprosate - a preclinical study

    Author : Pei Pei Chau; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Alcohol abuse and dependence make up the most prevalent categories of substance use disorders in the world. Converging evidence from the current research group has identified two receptor populations, the glycine (GlyRs) and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the mesolimbic dopamine system, as two potentially important targets for the development of new medication to treat alcohol dependence. Abstract : The toxic secondary metabolites β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) produced by phytoplankton groups such as cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates are known to cause neurotoxicity in vertebrates. BMAA has been linked to development of the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) and Alzheimer's disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Immunopathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni : Immunity and pathology in a primary and a secondary infection following chemotherapy in the mouse and the baboo models

    Author : Idle Omar Farah; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; Baboon; BALB c mice; Chemotherapy; Cytokines; Fibrosis; Granuloma; Modulation; Pathology; Reinfection; Schistosoma mansoni; Th1; Th2; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : This thesis describes a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the mechanisms ofimmunity and pathology elicited by both a primary infection and a reinfection exposure toSchistosoma mansoni following chemotherapy. The effects of a single large cercarial doseand a cumulatively equivalent dose, administered as multiple small doses are compared. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development and validation of a localized murine candidiasis model : The pathogenesis, chemotheraphy and defense mechanisms to Candida mastitis in the lactating mouse

    Author : Faisal Abdi Guhad; Uppsala universitet; []
