  1. 6. Epidemiological and Bacteriological Aspects of Spotted Fever Rickettsioses in Humans, Vectors and Mammals in Sweden

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Karin Elfving; Uppsala universitet.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rickettsia helvetica; ticks; cultivation; serology; polymerase chain reaction PCR ; DNA sequencing; western blot; electron microscopy; meningitis; seroprevalence;

    Abstract : Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria transmitted by arthropod vectors. Rickettsiae sometimes cause disease in humans, typically with high fever, headache and occasionally an eschar.In Sweden, Rickettsia helvetica, belonging to the spotted fever group, is the only tick-transmitted rickettsia found free in nature. 2. 7. Birds and Borrelia

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Björn Olsen; Umeå universitet.; Umeå universitet.; [1995]

    Abstract : The Lyme disease causing spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is transmitted by ticks within the genus Ixodes. These ticks are liberal host seekers and parasitise mammals, birds and reptiles.Prior to this study, the distribution of I. ricinus ticks and Lyme disease was thought to be restricted to the southern half of Sweden. Abstract : Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are together the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in the European Union. Campylobacter can be transmitted to humans via contaminated water, but it is largely unknown how these bacteria survive in water. READ MORE

  4. 9. An experimental study on the interaction between the neuro-endocrine and immune systems in the gastrointestinal tract

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Bi-Feng Qian; Umeå universitet.; Umeå universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gastrointestinal tract; neuro-endocrine system; substance P; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; vagus nerves; mucosal immune system; T lymphocytes; cytokines; inflammation; mouse;

    Abstract : The mucosa lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is in immediate contact with food nutrients to allow a rapid and efficient digestion and absorption and at the same time protects against the incessant risk of attack from pathogenic microbes. Maintenance of normal physiological activities in the GI tract is dependent on a number of regulatory interactions between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, as well as environmental and genetic factors.
