  1. 1. Water splitting in natural and artificial photosynthetic systems

    Author : Sergey Koroidov; Johannes Messinger; Richard J. Debus; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Water splitting; photosystem II; artificial catalyst; MIMS; inorganic carbon;

    Abstract : Photosynthesis is the unique biological process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds, for example sugars, using the energy of sunlight. Thereby solar energy is converted into chemical energy. Nearly all life depends on this reaction, either directly, or indirectly as the ultimate source of their food. READ MORE

  2. 2. Time-resolved Structural and Mechanistic Studies of Water Oxidation in Photosystem II : water here, water there, water everywhere

    Author : Casper de Lichtenberg; Johannes Messinger; Wolfgang P. Schröder; Holger Dau; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxygenic Photosynthesis; Photosystem II; TR-MIMS; isotope exchange; EPR; EDNMR; water splitting; water oxidation;

    Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is undisputedly one of the most important chemical processes for human life on earth as it not only fills the atmosphere with the oxygen that we need to breathe, but also sustains the accumulation of biomass, which is not only used as nourishment but is also present in almost every aspect of our lives as building material, textiles in clothes and furniture, or even as living decorations to name a few.The photosynthetic water-splitting mechanism is catalyzed by a water:plastoquinone oxido-reductase by the name of photosystem II (PSII), which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. 3. 3. MIMS - Multi Integrated Management Systems for Quality, Environment and Systematic Work Environment : A General management system, based on large Swedish companies

    Author : Hugo Eliasson; Lars Sörqvist; Thomas Zobel; KTH; []
    Keywords : Management System; Integrated Management; Multi; Integration; Quality; Environment; Systematic Work Environment; ISO 9001; ISO 14001; AFS 2001:1 and OHSAS 18001;

    Abstract : This thesis describes mature Multi Integrated Management System (MIMS), mainly within Swedish companies, certified against three or more certificates. Other criteria have been to have a business system, usually SAP R/3 and that the companies investigated have had more than 200 employees. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular mechanisms and biological consequences of the production of non-canonical D-amino acids in bacteria

    Author : Alena Aliashkevich; Felipe Cava; Fredrik Almqvist; Andrew J Roe; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteria; cell wall; peptidoglycan; D-amino acids; LD-transpeptidase;

    Abstract : Most bacteria possess a vital net-like macromolecule – peptidoglycan (PG). PG encases bacteria around the cytoplasmic membrane to withstand the high internal turgor pressure and thereby protect the cell from bursting. In addition, PG is a major morphological determinant of bacteria being both required and sufficient to maintain cell shape. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulatory pathways and virulence inhibition in Listeria monocytogenes

    Author : Christopher Andersson; Jörgen Johansson; Debra Milton; Åke Forsberg; Claude Parsot; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Listeria monocytogenes; PrfA; ActA; infection; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Listeria monocytogenes is a rod-shaped Gram positive bacterium. It generally exist ubiquitously in nature, where it lives as a saprophyte. Occasionally it however enters the food chain, from where it can be ingested by humans and cause gastro-intestinal distress. In immunocompetent individuals L. READ MORE
