  1. 1. Maf and Mitf transcription factors regulate pancreatic endocrine cell differentiation and function

    Author : Magdalena Mazur; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pancreas development; beta cells; insulin; MafA; MafB; Mitf; diabetes;

    Abstract : Diabetes - the imbalance in glucose homeostasis is partially caused by loss or dysfunction of pancreatic insulin producing β cells or development of insulin resistance. In Type 1 diabetes β cells are destroyed in the process of an autoimmune attack, whereas in Type 2 diabetes, islets produce insufficient amounts of insulin or the insulin cannot be used adequately. 2. 2. The Role of Melanocyte Lineage Genes in Melanoma

    Author : Adriana Sanna; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Melanoma; Genetic; Epigenetic; Heterogeneity; MITF; SOX10; CSD;

    Abstract : Malignant melanoma accounts for the highest number of deaths among all skin cancer types, and its incidence has increased dramatically over the past decades. Despite the tremendous therapeutic advances, treatment resistant cells emerge in the vast heterogeneity of melanoma, driving tumor relapse and poor patient outcome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Functional Studies of Genes Associated with Muscle Growth in Pigs and Hair Greying in Horses

    Author : Lin Jiang; Leif Andersson; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Gerli Pielberg; Christopher Tuggle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; QTN; muscle development; IGF2; ZBED6; RNA-seq; ChIP-seq; myoblasts; pancreatic beta cells; Grey horse; melanoma; MITF; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Domestic animals have become very different from their wild ancestors during domestication and animal breeding. This provides a good model to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation. In my thesis I have studied genes affecting two important traits, leanness in pigs and hair greying-associated melanoma in horses. READ MORE

  4. 4. Maf transcription factors in beta cell function

    Author : Elvira Ganic; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Beta cell; MafA; type 2 diabetes; insulin secretion; transcription; monoamine oxidase; MaoA; MaoB; nicotinic receptor subunits; nAChRs;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder caused by a defect or lack of beta cell-produced insulin that controls blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to glucose, insulin secretion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as well as monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. 5. 5. Mapping trait genes in dogs : using the dog as a model organism

    Author : Izabella Baranowska Körberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Understanding the genetic background of a given phenotypic trait or disease has long intrigued scientists. Model organisms can be employed when it is not feasible or possible to find trait causality in human cohorts. READ MORE
