  1. 16. Ecology and evolution of genetic and phenotypic variation in fritillary butterflies

    Author : Daniela Polic; Anders Forsman; Marjo Saastamoinen; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi;

    Abstract : Understanding how eco-evolutionary processes and environmental variation shape different dimensions of biodiversity is a major goal in evolutionary biology and ecology, and essential for the successful protection of biological variation. In this thesis, I used fritillary butterflies as model organisms to explore and further understand the origin and dynamics of genetic and phenotypic variation at different hierarchical levels of organisation and across different spatial scales. 2. 17. Fröheteromorfismen hos havsnarv och saltnarv : Spergularia media and Spergularia marina and their heteromorphic seed revisited

    Author : Anders Telenius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The flexibility of adaptation in plants to variable environmental conditions is greatly increased by the production of two or more different kinds of seeds. Such heteromorphic seeds, either with or without a winged margin, are characteristic of several species belonging to the genus Spergularia (Caryophyllaceae). READ MORE

  3. 18. Biodiversity and genetic patterns in marine invertebrates

    Author : Emma Vodoti; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : zoology; marine biodiversity;

    Abstract : Abstract: Systematics based on genetic data has both confirmed and contradicted earlier, morphologically defined species and their relatedness. Morphology does not always correspond to genetic lineages, and this will inevitably affect both traditional systematics as well as biodiversity assessments. READ MORE

  4. 19. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp

    Author : Lars Pettersson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Benefits; Costs; Predation; Chemical cues; Fish; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 5. 20. Effects of Environmental Factors on maternal Choice and Gene Dispersal in Plants

    Author : Teklehaimanot Haileselassie; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; siring ability; Maternal effect; genetically modified crops; risk assessment; morphological markers; herbivory; Cucumis sativus; Växtekologi; pollen tube growth rate; Plant ecology; Nicotiana alata;

    Abstract : Gene dispersal through pollen is affected by both abiotic and biotic environmental factors. In this study, I mainly investigated the effect of environmental factors: nutrient availability, simulated herbivory and floral morphology (flower colour), on the siring success of competing pollen donors and fitness of the resulting offspring.
