  1. 1. Waste incineration residues : Persistent organic pollutants in flue gas and fly ash from waste incineration

    Author : Eva Weidemann; Lisa Lundin; Stellan Marklund; Jean-Francois Boily; Henrik Bristav; Kees Olie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MSW; PCDD; PCDF; PCN; PCB; POP; formation; degradation; case study; flue gas sampling thermal treatment; fly ash; surface characterization;

    Abstract : Modern societies produce large quantities of municipal solid waste (MSW), which is commonly disposed of by incineration. This has several advantages: it reduces the waste’s volume and sterilizes it while also enabling energy recovery. READ MORE

  2. 2. Systems Aspects of Increased Swedish Waste Incineration

    Author : Jenny Sahlin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biological treatment; incineration tax; waste management; waste import; value of households’ time.; waste incineration; district heating; MSW; landfilling ban; recycling;

    Abstract : Abstract Recent bans on landfilling of combustible and organic waste in Sweden have resulted in an increase in alternative waste treatment, especially waste incineration with energy recovery. This thesis elucidates how the current increase in Swedish waste incineration affects and is affected by the two systems to which it belongs: the waste management and the energy systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Formation and degradation of PCDD/F in waste incineration ashes

    Author : Lisa Lundin; Stellan Marklund; Mats Tysklind; James Mulholland; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MSW; fly ash; remediation; ash; PCDD; PCDF; formation; degradation; destruction; dechlorination; thermal treatment; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The disposal of combustible wastes by incineration is a controversial issue that is strongly debated by both scientists and environmental activists due to the resulting emissions of noxious compounds, including (inter alia) polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), heavy metals and acid gases like sulfur dioxide. Currently available air pollution control devices are capable of effectively cleaning flue gases, and PCDD/F emissions to air from modern municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators are low. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mixed fuels composed of household waste and waste wood : Characterization, combustion behaviour and potential emissions

    Author : Mar Edo Giménez; Stina Jansson; Jonas Dahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MSW; RDF; persistent organic pollutants; PCDD; PCDF; solid waste pre-treatment; torrefaction; food waste; contaminated wood;

    Abstract :    Incineration with energy recovery is the main disposal strategy for waste that cannot be reused or recycled, and a well-established source of energy in Europe, especially in Sweden where 2.2 Mtonnes of waste including domestic and imported municipal solid waste (MSW) and waste wood (WW) were combusted during 2015. 5. 5. Combined Electricity Production and Thermally Driven Cooling from Municipal Solid Waste

    Author : Seksan Udomsri; Andrew R. Martin; Torsten Fransson; Erik Dahlquist; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; municipal solid waste; incineration; hybrid cycle; power production; thermally driven cooling; absorption chillers; decentralized thermally driven cooling; district heating; Mechanical and thermal engineering; Mekanisk och termisk energiteknik; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : Increasingly intensive efforts are being made to enhance energy systems via augmented introduction of renewable energy along with improved energy efficiency. Resource constraints and sustained high fossil fuel prices have created a new phenomenon in the world market. READ MORE
